Hello everyone,
Even thou I am from the Northeast, I was hoping that your regional chapter could give me some "must see" places to visit.
My husband and I along with my Brother and sister-in-law are planning a trip to Gettysburg, PA from 8/2/08 - 8/9/08 and then moving to Williamsburg, VA from 8/9/08 - 8/16/08. We will be camping in our 5th wheel.
I have done searches on the "tourist" things to do, but was looking for some things that wouldn't be in the tourist hand books.
I thank you in advance for your help and if you ever need thing to see and do in Northwest Vermont, please feel free to contact me.

We go to both places frequently.
Gettysburg - make sure you do a battlefield tour. You can purchase a tape or CD at the Wax Museum down town and go on an auto tour. It is great!
Where are you staying? Artillery Ridge Campground offers horseback tours. It also has a good diarama depicting the battle. You can still do both even if you are not staying there.
Make sure you eat at the Dobbin House Spring House Tavern. The food is great and the atmosphere is from the period.
Williamsburg - plan on spending several days touring. There is Historic Williamsburg with all of its restored buildings. Try to eat at each of the old taverns - Shields Tavern, Chownings, Kings Arms, and Christiana Canpbells. You won't be disappointed. There is alot to see, so make sure you buy the pass and take your time.
Nearby is the original Jamestown settlement location. It is an active archeological site and is very interesting. Also nearby is a recreation of the Jamestown Settlement which is a very good thing to see.
Also nearby is Yorktown where Cornwallis surrendered during the Reevolutionary War. There is a great visitors center and some tours. One interesting piece of trivia is that Yorktown was the site of both Revolutionary War and Civil War battles. The same battlements and earthworks were used in both.
I'm sure I'll think of more and will post as i do.

While in Williamsburg I would recommend staying at the American Heritage RV Park as it is one of better parks in the area.
Also would recommend a day trip to the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area, where you'll find the Battleship Wisconsin berthed in downtown Norfolk and the nearby Nauticus maritime attraction, as well as the Virginia Aquarium and Science Center in Virginia Beach.
The Aquarium and Science Center is one of the best in the country and something I'd consider a must see for all, especially the little ones in the family.

While touring Gettysburg be sure to include a stop at the Trostle Farm. This farm was once owned by my relatives and was directly in the middle of the battle.
Do not miss Lancaster, PA. Take a tour of Amish Country and get the real inside information about their culture and life style.
Also try to visit the Drake Oil Well Museum and Pit Hole City near Titusville, PA. You will learn amazing history about the start of the oil industry. You can stay at many campgrounds in the area, but the best is the nearby Tionesta Corp of Engineers Recreation Area Campground...absolutely perfect!!
Then if you like beer check out the Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville, PA or the 2nd oldest brewery, Straub's, in St. Mary's, PA.

Fly, I believe its Pottsville, PA.
Papotvin, If you go to Pottsville stop off at Cabelas RT I-78 and SR61. About 3 miles north of Cabelas is a place called the Port Clinton Hotel, just a few doors down from the BMW motorcycle shop. They have one of the best steak sandwichs and hand cut french fries I've ever eaten. And I'm from Philly, so trust me on this one. If you do go to Pottsville also look around the area as it is the birth place of Anthricite coal mining in the USA. Great mining history. Maybe you could put aside some time for our Mid Atlantic fall rally in Sept. To be held in Hershey PA.
Also, let me welcome you to the IRV2 forum. Don't worry about not being from one region or another. We all hang out together at each others rallies, and areas. One of the great things about IRV2 is the ability to net work and gather info from people just like yourself and your family. So come back often and ask as many questions as you wish. I will be passing through Vermont after I leave Maine in a couple of weeks on our way to the FMCA rally in MN. Have Fun, and Travel Safe.
