My wife and I are considering a 4 day trip to WV. However, we are not planning on going the normal tourist visit. I want to do some family geneology research in Berwind. Thats the heart of McDowell county, and the heart of coal country. I have actually found a small campground with hook ups in Premier, near Welch. I would be traveling from NC, taking US 77 through VA into WV. Then taking US 52 to Premier. What can I expect as far as road conditions in this area. I have an older 37 ft gasser and a toad. All in good working order. I have never driven through mountains yet, and I've got the feeling that I am talking some serious mountain adventures here. Any advice would be appriciated.

I work in that area for some time but that was about 10 years ago. Yes lots of mountain roads 52 is not a bad road but off of 52 some very narrow and steep roads. Not to far up 77 from Princeton WV is a nice campground and you would about an hour of anywhere in MCDowell Co. If you have time Coalwood WV is a great place to vist.Home of author Homer Hickam he wrote book that movie October Sky was based on and several other book about growing up in McDowell Co. Some of friendliest people I have every meet live in that area of WV Good luck with your research

Hi there MACHMAN, sounds like your off on a new adventure. One reference I use is the "Trailer Life" Campground Finder.
www.tldirectory.com
It is part of the GoodSam "Empire". Has very good maps and info on Rvin' sites.

Best Regards and Happy Travels, Clyde

Any of the WV state parks have good facilities.

Go to www.hitchitch.com. Click on the 50 states section, then WV, the scroll down to state parks. It lists them all.
