Your recommendation in VA/MD

We are new to the DC area and looking for recommendation for weekend jaunts in our RV. We enjoy hiking, kayaking, and relaxing. Oh! Camper boy is now 3 and 110lb full yellow lab!

Here you go:

The Trough - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Can be done as a day trip or overnight along the banks.

I know you said VA/MD, but you are mistaken to not include WV. We have a lot of outdoor adventures and great wilderness areas.

I've had my RV for seven months now. I vowed to get out there once a month and enjoy it for a weekend. Here is where I have gone so far and/or plan to go:

October, 2012- Greenville Farms Family Campground, Haymarket, VA
November, 2012- Lake Fairfax Regional Park, Reston, VA
December, 2012- KOA, Madison, VA
January, 2013- Bull Run Regional Park, Centreville, VA
February, 2013- Pohick Bay Regional Park, Lorton, VA
March, 2013- Prince William Forest Travel Trailer Village, Dumfries, VA (3/24)
April, 2013- Andy Guest/Shenandoah River State Park, Bentonville, VA (4/26 with the Virginia Campers)

These have all been great places to spend a weekend. There are at least 40 more campgrounds within 100 miles of DC that I plan on going to in the coming months and years. A lot of fun times to look forward to.

You live within just a few hours of lots of great places to camp. Gettysburg, the beach, Williamsburg, etc. really just pick a place and search for a campground.

You’re in a prime area for weekend trips. Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania all have may excellent state parks for less than $30 a night. Most within a 3 hour drive and with a Friday evening departure will get you on site before sun set.

Virginia State Parks
Maryland Department of Natural Resources - Maryland Park Service
PA*DCNR*-*Pennsylvania State Parks

Also we have a group called VA Campers. Just a bunch of family’s that like to camp. No dues, elections, bylaws and such. We have a rally next month at Shenandoah River State Park and you are welcome to come on down.

All of the VA state parks are great and pet frendly. Lake Anna has a lot to offer, Pocahauntas near Richmond has nice hiking paths and kayaking. Bele Isle does not have a public pool, so it is quieter than most other parks. Westmoreland is an older park with a lot to offer from fossel hunting to boating (and one of the longest set of steps I've ever seen) Shennandoah and James River are similar as they both border the river, Shennandoah camping is very near the river. A real gem is Doubthat park out past Lexington VA.. Beautiful park nestled in the mountains. Twin Lakes is VERY tight for larger RV sites, but very nice lake for fishing.

There is always the National Park campgrounds on Skyline Drive, Matthews Arm and Big Medows..

If you are in Northern VA, a weekend trip to Gettysburg is a must do, I like the campground nearest the battlefield that offers horseback rides to the park. Drummer boy CG is is good, but very close to RT 15 and some sites can be noisy.

A favorite our ours in the late fall is Gettysburg KOA, we love to attend the Grand Illumination and Bush Gardens festival of lights, usually the fist weekend of December.

We even attended Pumpkin Chunkin over in Deleware, dry camp in a cornfield, waking to the sound of pumkin cannons!

Andy Guest state park just south of Front Royal is fantastic. Right on the Shenandoah river and the CG was recently upgraded and the sites are level and great. Send me a message if you go and we can get together. I'm about 5 minutes from there.

I also recommend the KOA in Luray. Not too far from the caverns and it is very well kept.

I grew up outside of D.C. in the Maryland suburbs. Really miss the Metro into the museums.

I will be heading to Little Bennett in upper Montgomery County in April , and will do Gambrill and Deep Creek Lake in western Maryland this year.

I'll add my vote to camping in WV - Canaan Valley and Greenbriar should not be missed.
