Folks,

One of the items on my "Bucket list" is to return to my home town (Meriden, CT), for a couple of weeks this summer. We're full timers and are completely self sufficient with 700AH of batteries, 780 watts of solar and 400 watts of wind power, and can boondock for the duration if necessary. I haven't been back there in 20 years but even back then, I can't remember anyplace I would be able to park for a couple of weeks, at least on the east side where I'm from. We of course, would need a place to dump and get fresh water.

The only campground I was able to find was in the New London area and I don't want to drive back and forth that distance.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Tincup, if you were State Trooper you might be able to stay at the Cop Shp up there but unlikely.

I recall that Hammonasset Beach State Park has primitive sites, water and a dump station.

Finding a facility to park your rig in that area of Connecticut is going to be challenging since every campground up that way is trying to make their yearly quote from Apr to Oct.

Hammonasset Beach is 22 miles from Meriden and you can run 147 to 77 down to I95 and over to the Beach.

Lock up all your stuff when you're not there because it's a big out of state draw for people coming in from NYC by the bus load. It's like their Nirvana almost!!

The place itself is quite nice though and it would be someplace that I would consider if I had extended boondocking capability.

Thanks for the response Driver, yea, I forgot about Hammonasset. When I was a kid we lived there in the summer. I'll check it out but not sure I want to leave the rig unattended for extended periods.

Tincup, "Aces High" in East Lyme might be a thought. it is exit 74 off rt95. It is an award winner. Take 95 up rt 9 and you would be there in a half hr. or less. You would be near alot of activities and moments from the ocean. Casino's, ocean, golfing, Sat night short track Nascar speedway, and of course Mystic.

In Higganum is Little city campground Little City Campground, Connecticut
and in Watertown is Black Rock, a state campground DEP: Black Rock State Park
I haven't stayed at any of them but I hope maybe they can give you some guidance.

Wayne,

Totoket is the winner so far, just a short hop up to Meriden. When we firm up our travel dates I'll make my reservation.

Thanks!

Tincup, you are going to see some big changes, most for the good, in Meriden. Jacoby's is still there and still serves great food.

My recollection is that the southbound rest area on I-91 in Wallingford has a dump station.

There are Wal-Marts in Wallingford & Cromwell that are an option.

In addition to Wolf's Den, some other campground options are:

Markham Meadows Campgrounds
(860) 267-9738
7 Markham Rd, East Hampton, CT
markhammeadows.com

Little City Campground
(860) 345-8469 741
Little City Rd, Higganum, CT

Nelsons Family Camp Ground
(860) 267-5300
71 Mott Hill Rd, East Hampton, CT www.nelsonscampground.com
