I heard that the black flies or something can be nasty in June. Is that true and is it all over New England or certain states/area's?

The black flies are real nasty biters and they are mostly in the northern states and in the mountainous regions of the lower states. The rest of New England is known for a healthy mosquito population.

The mosquitoes vary according to rainfall. The more rain, the more mosquitoes.

From our experience here in southern New Hampshire, black fly season runs approximately early May to early June, with the worst being mid-May. Because the larvae require oxygenated water to survive, they hatch in moving streams and rivers. Since we've had no snow yet this year (now that I've said that, we'll probably be inundated with blizzards!), the Spring runoff may be lower than normal, hopefully resulting in a shorter or less severe black fly season. Although there are still the April Showers to come... By the way, the Black Fly is the unofficial "State Bird" of New Hampshire!
As far as mosquitoes are concerned, it seems that they're out nightly, late Spring to early Fall. And Lynn is definitely right about the rain.

When we have our outside floods lit on the back of the house we don't see a cloud of bugs like you would see up in New England.
BIG PLus ... we have an RV pad.

The worst I have encountered is the Maine woods, worse if its a wet spring.NH is mostly may early june depending on where you are.One year early may canoeing with the kids down the Saco river we got attacked with our preverbial pants down(no deet). Kids still give us a hard time when we mention canoe trips.
