Can any of you Noreasters give me some info on crossing NY and getting around Niagra Falls. We plan a trip from GA to Biddeford ME in early April and would like to then go to Niagra Falls, probably along I-90. We would make a short stop near the falls with three or four children's wheelchairs (the kids will only watch so much falling water). Is Goat Island easily accessible by RV, and are there walkways on the Island that would allow a pretty good look at the Falls with the wheelchairs?

Ken, I think the shortest way is I-75N to I-90E in to Buffalo and the falls then I-90E to 495N to I-95N I can't see any other way unless you use secondary roads. Most attractions are handicap accessible, Best view of the falls is on the Canadian side hope this helps you.

Earl,
Thanks, but we'll be going to Maine first, then to Niagra Falls. And I am also under the impression you now need a passport to go into or back from Canada. This would not be practical for the short time we would be in the area.

Don't think you need the passport for ground travel yet - only air travel.

Ken, What part of NY are tring to avoid? If you just want to miss all the trafic on 95 use 81 to 84 through CT and into 90 to 495 back into 95 at the NH line and north 95 to ME don't remember what # exit but they are marked well. Bill is right you don't need a passport for ground travel yet I think its 2008.

I'm a bit confused, are you trying to avoid Niagra Falls or are you asking how to navigate in the Niagra Falls area?

I can see where the confusion might have started, since I said "getting around Niagra Falls". We plan to go from Georgia to Maine, then go to Niagra Falls. We want to see the Falls, but plan to only spend a short time in that area. We will probably arrive there in the afternoon and go to a campground, then see the Falls the next morning and head south from there in the afternoon. We will have our motorhome and trailer, but no toad, so we're limited on how much we can move around in the area of the Falls. Since we will be handling up to four wheelchairs while we are there, we need to insure we will be able to move to where we can see the Falls (fairly level paved walkways). It looks like there is a large parking lot on Goat Island, but I don't know about parking on the Canadian side. And I don't know how much trouble we would have trying to get the motorhome into Canada for just a few hours.

Its best that you travel from Maine #95 south, west #495 to #90 to#190 to Niagara Falls city. Goat Is. has parking for your MH & tow. There are Handicap access to the falls. We always go to Canadian side but the N.Y. side will be easier for you. They may have improved the park on Goat Is. since we were there. They may have Handicap parking near the falls. You could park TT in parking lot. The kids will enjoy.
