We are traveling from the Outer Banks NC to Nova Scotia. Can anyone recommend a good route from Albany/Truy NY area eastward to the coast? I am told Rt. 9 is not a good choice due to 2 lane winding road.

I can't help you on the Albany/Troy eastward to the coast routing. We just came back for a couple of months in Nova Scotia......mostly on Cape Breton. I can tell you that I-95 is, IMO, the best route that far North. Crossing into CA you can cross at Houlton, ME and have excellent roads all the way to NS. If your cross at Calais, ME the roads are not too bad at all. But, the crossing there is very tight and very busy. Houlton is less crowded. A good park enroute is Stonehurst in Moncton, NB. And on Cape Bretton at Baddeck, Bras d'Or Lakes is good but not if the ground is wet (clay soils).
If you need to resupply there is a Costco and Walmart at the Chain Lake exit on the 102 near Halifax. You can park in the Walmart lot near Costco very safely for a couple of nights. You will be very close to a police station.
Have fun and have a good trip.
Most of the parks in NB and NS accept Passport America after Labor Day.

You're very welcome. Just holler if you have some questions that I could help you with on Nova Scotia or PEI.

Unfortunately, there are no “good” west-east routes through Vermont and New Hampshire.
By choosing the most direct route, we’ve driven Route 7/Route 9 several times with no problems. Yes, it is mostly 2 lanes in VT and there are some steep grades (the worst being Hogback Mountain), but in NH the road widens to 4 lanes in parts.
Continuing on Route 9/202 east in NH, avoid downtown Concord by picking up Route 89 South (in Hopkinton) to Route 93 North, to Route 393 East, which turns back into Routes 9/202/4.
Or if you prefer a more “highway” route, take Route 89 South to Route 93 South (aka Everett Turnpike for a few miles, with one toll in Hooksett). After the toll booth, stay right onto Route 93) to Route 101 east.
Since we work in Concord, we’re most familiar with this area. As for the rest of the route, we enjoy “the road less traveled,” so for us it’s not bad at all!
