Travel to Maine From Toledo
Looking to visit Vermont, NH, and Maine this fall. Will be traveling from Toledo Ohio. We are traveling in a 37 ft motorhome and towing and was wondering what could be a good route. We don't have a set destination we are going to, other than see the sights. Also what some of the good spots to visit. Also how late are the campgrounds open.

You should be fine into October.
Question... do you want to hit Vermont first or last?
What area's of Maine do you want to visit? Portland and Bar Harbor/Acadia are both wonderful. Tell the lobsters we miss them!

We were going to hit Vermont first but that could change. We will do Bar Harbor and maybe get to NS to see the tidal change in the Bay of Fundy.

A lot of CG close down after Columbus day. Mid Oct. Some will always be open.
If your wanting to do the sights, Ft Ticonderoga in NY, Rt 100 up the Green mountains of VT. up to Stowe. The White mountains of NH especially Mt Washington. The trip to the top is awesome. In Maine we love Boothbay and Bar Harbour. Tidal changes there are pretty big too.
Good luck and Happy Trailsl!!

Thanks for the tips of places to see. That now helps me plan my trip which looks like Ft. Ticonderoga, Conway Scenic RR, Boothbay Maine and up. It looks like the second week of September we will leave. How are the roads in Vermont, NH, and Maine. It appears a lot of 2 lane but if not a lot of switch backs like the US 101 on the West Coast, not a problem.

Just got back from Maine Wed. Cabbage Island Clambake out of Boothbay but pass on the whale,watch....not worth it. Also, Lucky Catch Cruises out of Portland is awesome. You got out on a lobster boat anx pull trapd, measur lobsters, band, etc. Limited to only 20 people. When done, you can buy your lobster right off the boat.
We stay down at Sagadahock Campgrou d on the bay and you can dig your own littleneck clams there. Ready to go back already!!

What do you like? We are looking at a couple of weeks in southern VT and western MA just to hit some museums in mid September. That is literally Norman Rockwell country as he lived near Bennington VT and Stockbridge MA. Museums both places.

We did a similar trip in July from Illinois. We spent a week in Rangeley Maine, it is really beautiful. We stayed at the Cupsuptic campground on a lake with the same name. A very nice place.
We headed to Canada from there so skipped Bar Harbor. We came back through Vermont and stayed at the Champlain Adult campground. Another gorgeous area. The site we had had a nice view of the lake.
For a route coming home we picked up 90 east of Rome NY coming down from Vermont. We had been on two lane roads from Burlington VT till we hit Rome. If you want interstate they are pretty few and far between in. Maine, NH and VT.
You might think about going through Detroit into Canada all the way to Sherbrooke Quebec. It's a pretty drive from there down into NH and Maine. We did that years ago when heading to Acadia.

Thanks for all the tips. We will stop in Albany NY for the Dutch Apple Cruise and visit the USS Slater. On to Burlington VT so my wife can ride the Segway and we do the Green Mountain RR. We will go onto Lincoln NH. There is a lot to see so don't know how long we will be there. Will also do the Conway Scenic RR. On to Bangor to the Cole Land Transportation Museum. Will then go to Bar Harbor for a few days and visit Acadia National Park. On to Portland, plan on doing the Lucky Catch Cruise, Main Military Museum and Downeast Duck Adventures. From Portland we will visit Hyde Park New York for the FDR Presidential Library. So far we have visited 7 Presidential Libraries in the last 2 years. Scranton PA will be the next stop at the Steamtown National Historic Site. We will stop in Reading PA to visit friends and then back to Toledo.
That is a rough cut because as we all know, you always see something on the drive. Will be leaving second week of September and ensure we will be on our way back before most of the campgrounds close around Columbus day.
