Heading up that way tomorrow. (we live about an hour away) and will check out the CG. Ms C's sister and husband have a cabin up on a mountain near there.

Driving question. We plan on coming up on 129 to Athens, should we go up 441 to Clayton then over to the campground OR take 129 to Cleveland then up through Helen to the campground ?

Thanks Jim

If you go up 129 from Athens, you have a long pull over Blood Mountain to get into Blairsville, lot of hard turns etc. Scenery is great, but you will be too busy driving to see it. I suggest you go US441 from Athens to Commerce and then Clayton, then left in Clayton over to Hiawassee. Better road and less long pulls. As you start into Hiawassee and cross the first part of the lake, start looking on the left for a hiway to Helen. The CG is off this road on the left. DON'T do the route from Helen to Hiawassee towing the 5er.

Jim, Doc's advice to ride 441 to Clayton then west on 76 towards Hiawassee is definitely the better option. We are at our summer/fall site in River Vista Mountain Village, in Dillard, about 8 miles north of Clayton on 441. We've made the drive from Clayton to Hiawassee many times with and without the rv. We drove thru Riverbend for the first time last fall. Nice, quaint and clean campground. You'll certainly get some peace and quiet. Perhaps we'll stop in on you while you're there.

Jeff, yes we will need to get together. We have been to River Vista twice and like the area. We have also been to RCC a number of times and like Dan's Clam Stand.

Jim & MJ Johnson

Also like Willie's in Valrico.

Jim,

Unless your objective is to avoid Atlanta, another option is I-75 to I-575 to GA 515 to US 76. This is all 4 lane to Blairsville, then 2 lane as I recall from there to Hiawassee. We'll be spending a couple of weeks late this month in Blairsville and plan on going that way.

We went over to River Bend today. NICE!! Didn't even know it was there and we have been traveling in that area for years, mostly auto and motorcycle. Very nicely kept, grass trimmed and flowers nice. Lower comfort station is great - chrome shined like new and no wet floors outside the showers. Lot of shade and large sites. Gravel sites and roads. Could get dusty, I suspect, with a lot of traffic. I took pictures but it is such a pain to post them now. The lady working the store is just perfect and has a better country accent than mine!
By the way, when you come in from Clayton, I believe you can get in by turning left on Kelly Road as you approach Hiawassee. We came out that way and it is closer to the main highway and the road is just as wide.
The lake is full and blue. Ms C said she liked the place as well as River Vista in Dillard. I won't go that far until I get a satellite and good wifi signal.
Let's go camping!!

Tried to upload the photo's, but I don't know how to resize them to fit. :(

We are on our way to the area now. Will be in Blairsville June 5 thru 12 at the Mountain View RV Resort. We are going to relax and go to the Highland Games June 11-12.

We have stayed at the Riverbend Campground several times and like it there also.

Unfortunately, we will not be able to be there in August as we will be in CO. However we are returning to Blairsville in the fall, Oct 10-24.
