For anyone unfamiliar with a Chinese Auction is or needs a refresher, following is a description I adapted and revised from the Appalachian Campers forum:

Everyone brings an artfully wrapped gift (one per person attending) to the event. All the gifts are placed on a table near the group and each person bringing a gift is given a slip of paper with a number on it. The slips are numbered consecutively: 1 through however many folks show up with a gift.

To start the auction, a number is drawn and the person having that number goes to the table and selects a gift (no pick-ups and put-backs), unwraps it, and shows it off to the group. No fair hiding it. That person then draws the next number to be called before sitting down. The second person has the option of choosing the gift the first person has or taking one from the table. The third person and so on after that, each have the option of taking any gift previously selected or one from the table. Any person who has to relinquish his or her gift can than select someone else's gift or make another selection from the table. As the auction progresses and several gifts are popular and/or desired, it gets interesting when someone takes a gift from someone who wants to keep it.
Rule 1: The gift must be relinquished if selected.
Rule 2: To avoid an all-night event, after a gift has changed hands four times during a round, it is out of play for the remainder of that round, but is back in play during subsequent rounds.

After the last person has had their turn, the person who was first gets an opportunity to exchange his/her gift with anyone else's since they didn't have a gift choice in the beginning.

It can be a lot of fun and the gift doesn't need to be anything of much value. If you spend more than $6 or $7, you've spent too much. It can be something practical, impractical, or downright silly. It can be something you've had laying around the camper that's no longer needed, a useless gift that a distant relative gave you last Christmas, or merely something you picked up at a dollar store just for the auction.
