This morning Jaymie got hit by a car. My yard crew came about 9:00 and were finished by 10:30. I went out my front door to talk to them before they left. I came back inside the house and let the dogs out the back door to let them stay in the back yard for a little while. I went upstairs to get on the computer. A few minutes later I heard Jaymie squeal and looked from the upstairs window and could see someone running away from my house. I got downstairs as quickly as I could and went outside. Apparently the yard crew had not secured the latch on the gate and the dogs got out. Jaymie was hit at the end of my driveway by a young kid taking his driving test (I live right down the street from the DPS office). Jaymie made it back into the yard and I opened the door for her to come in the house. She was covered in blood. She hid under the breakfast room table and cried. I got her out and into the car and we headed for the vet's office. They sedated her and assessed the damage. Both of her legs were run over but she is still alive. They don't know if the legs are broken or just badly cut up. I could see bone on both legs but I don't know if the skin was just gone or the bone was sticking out. They have done surgery and she will have to spend tonight at the Emergency Clinic for monitoring and go back to the vet's office tomorrow.

Barbara,
While I don't know you, I know what it is like to have a four legged member of the family hit by a car. Several years ago we had one of our dogs hit by a car and it looked pretty bad at the time. But we got her to the vet, and eventually everything turned out fine, and she ended up living a long and happy life. Sounds like that's how it will end up for you and your dog, seems rough now but hang in there. I'm sure there are a lot of folks hoping and praying...

Hi Barbara,
Thinking of you and Jaymie. Those "Hairy Kids" are so very special. Hoping that in no time she will be walking with you and Sammy and attending our rallies. We're thinking of you and hoping for the best.

Give Jayme a big hug from all of us...well, not too big of a hug until she is a lot better.

Thanks to all the kind words from my Boomer family. You are all very important to me!
Jaymie update: After finally getting to sleep about 4:00 AM, I had to get up at 6:30 to pick Jaymie up at the Animal Emergency Clinic by 7:00 AM. She had a pretty good night but they had to put one of those cone things on her so she wouldn't try to lick her wounds. The vet said they were worried about her last night but she looks much better today. They will not let me bring her home yet. The vet says she still needs observation and would need to be carried outside for bathroom duty. I went to my foot doctor today and I am still "with boot" but I can try to walk a little bit without the crutches (little does he know I have already been doing that). Finally I can get the foot wet when I shower so no more plastic shower boot. Yea!
Sue Yoder's daughter, Samantha, may come stay with me a few days to help with carrying Jaymie. If they let Jaymie come home tomorrow she will still have to go back every day to check the bandages and see how she is healing. They say she is as stitched up as possible but there are still areas that are open and may need grafts. There is also some problem with one foot that they have not defined.
As for my bank account, I had wanted to go to the Boomers rally at Bandera but figured I couldn't afford the $200 in gas it would cost me. So much for staying on a budget - last night's stay at the Animal Emergency Clinic was $285, and that's after they waived a $100 fee because my vet actually made the reservation. Grant Road Animal Clinic has not even HINTED at how much I will owe them. They have my dog so they know I will pay anything to get her back.

Our furr-babies get better medical care than we do - know that for a fact! I would rather take "the hit" and be incapacitated than to have one of my pets sick or hurt.
Some "friend" (not a Texas Boomer) said to me when AnnaBelle had to have heart surgery at Texas A&M - "she's just a dog - why would you spend that much money on a dog? " - well, yes she is a dog, but she's a part of our family and I wouldn't withhold treatment from her any more than I would with a human child. That's just the way it is when you own a pet.
Our prayers continue for Jaymie in her healing process - bless Samantha's heart for coming to help with her while YOU heal from your foot surgery
Sandy

I thought I had all bases covered with Samantha coming here to help me so I called the vet's office but the doctor said Jaymie is not ready to come home yet. I will have to wait until Saturday and she will be re-assessed. I miss her and it makes me upset that I am not physically able to care for her.

  JAYMIE SPADE
The vet held her up while I took these pictures. Both back legs are bandaged up with splints. She is being so brave and everyone there tells me what a sweet dog she has been. I get to visit her every day. She still has a lot of healing to do but she was a very lucky dog. The car that hit her dragged her for quite a ways to do all the damage he did to her legs.
Thank you to everyone who has replied here or sent messages to me. It really shows me how much of a family the Texas Boomers are and what a great support you have been to me.
