New Tires for the 5'ver
I would like to know which brand tires I should get. The current tires are 5 yr old Mission(?) ST235/80R 16. I read that Carlisle has improved their tire. I was to stay away from GY Marathon's. The tire of choice seems to be GY G614.
What say ye?

Richard see if you can get in touch with either Rusty or Ken Wilson they should be able to lead you to a good tire. Mike

I tried about 5 different brands of ST tires and like my friends, changed to 16" wheels and Yokohama 215/85-R16 tires, and never had another tire problem.

Richard,
If you're going to stay with an ST 235/80-16 tire, I'd suggest Maxxis - they seem to be better than most from the reports I read. If you're going to try the LT235/85R-16G G614 RSTs, check your wheels for inflation pressure ratings; the G614s are rated 3750 lbs @ 110 PSIG, but many wheels that came with load range E tires are only rated for 80 PSIG. At 80 PSIG, the G614 has a load rating of only 3042 lbs, just like any other load range E LT tire, and that's probably lower than the rating of the ST tires you have now.
Of course, another option is to do what Ken Wilson and I have done - go to 17.5" wheels with 215/75R-17.5 Goodyear G114 or Michelin XTA tires. These tires are rated 4805 lbs @ 120 PSIG, so they are just loafing under our 5th wheels. Ken and I have both noticed that they run so cool that you can lay your hand on the tread even coming off the Interstate on a 105 degree day in West Texas. These tires are ~1/2" smaller in diameter than the 16" G614s, so they will fit anywhere the LT235/85R-16 tire will fit.

Thanks Rusty. Like Mike said, ask Rusty or Ken they will have the answer. I think I will stay with the 16's and look for Maxxis in SA

Richard I went with Yokohama Geolander LTs on my 16 in rims from Discount tire and they seem to work OK. I did have a blowout on one but it was caused by tire rub that I was not aware of til it went. If you take the replacement insurance Discount will replace them with no questions asked.

Don,
The problem with the load range E LT tires is that a LT235/85R-16E is only rated for 3042 lbs. The ST235/80R-16 tires that Richard is replacing are probably rated around 3500 lbs or so. This is getting to be more of a common problem and the reason I couldn't recommend going to a load range E LT235/85R-16E tire. If I could, I'm still a believer in the Michelin XPS Ribs because of their all-steel commercial tire construction versus fabric carcass with a steel belt of most other consumer-type LT tires.

I changed to the E rated LT tires after having many issues with the D rated GY Marathons that came on my trailer and as you know at your great advice changed to XPS ribs but now they have gotten so expensive that I can buy 2 Yokohamas for the price of 1 Michelin.

It's a value decision, and the peace of mind of not having to worry about tire failures is worth the $$$ to me. That's why I have the 17.5" Michelin XTAs under our current 5th wheel in place of the 16" Goodyear G614s that suffered two (2) tread separation failures within a 3 month period.
