Those who attended the recent Memorial Day Rally saw the cutest t-shirt with "weaving" around the bottom worn by our own Kathy Hewlett. Kathy was kind enough to share the directions on how to do this adorable "trim" to an otherwise average, t-shirt to spice it up a bit!

Below are the instructions she gave. If you have the artistic/crafty touch to try this during the summer months...... use an old t-shirt first until you get the hang of it. IF you master the weaving effect (which Kathy swears is E-A-S-Y) then we'll plan an afternoon craft hour for the ladies at the Labor Day Rally in Boerne and we can all learn how to do it!

T-SHIRT WEAVING

Materials Needed:
1 T-Shirt
note: the shirt will be approx 3” shorter when finished so make sure you purchase a longer t-shirt!
2 inch regular masking tape
Scissors
Pencil or Pen
Needle and Thread to match the color of the t-shirt
1” x 6” ruler
Straight pins

Directions:

1. Turn the t shirt inside out.
2. Tear the 2” masking tape into 4-6” strips and place near the edge of the inside bottom hem
overlapping slightly to make a 2” wide band around the entire bottom hem of the shirt.

3. Turn the shirt right side out and fold up the bottom so the entire taped strip shows.
Note: the bottom edge of the tape should be at the edge of the fold.

4. Pin the loose edge of the t-shirt to secure the fold.

5. Staring under one of the arms, use a 1” wide ruler to draw vertical 1 inch apart all along the tape – adjust the final line to make the spacing as evenly as possible.

6. Cut on the lines from the fold to very near the edge of the tape being sure not to cut any hem
stitches.

7. Remove the tape and pins.

8. Starting again under one of the arms, hold up one of the strips of material. Pull the strip that is to the left under the strip you are holding. This will become the new strip of material to hold
while continuing to “weave” the strips – always holding one and pulling the strip to the left to
make your “weave”.

9. Continue this process all the way around the bottom of your t-shirt.

10. After you have pulled the last strip through, cut it in half.

11. Find the first hole to the top left and loop the top half of the cut strip through it. Find the first hole to the bottom left and loop the bottom half of the cut strip through it.

12. Put the cut ends together and whipstitch it into place in the inside of the t-shirt.

13. Pull on the t-shirt to align your work and look for any cut edges showing and turn those strips under.

Second Row of Weaving

1. Turn the t-shirt inside out.

2. Place masking tape ½” from the first row and repeat the steps above.

If you are Weaving Sleeves
Use ½” masking tape instead of the 2” masking tape and cut strips ¾” instead of 1” and work the above process to weave around the sleeve.

How about a picture to go with the instructions! Sounds like an interesting project.

Unfortunately, we didn't get a pic of her t-shirt, but as soon as I do one of these I'll get a pic up!

I just did a google search on tshirt weaving and they have some tutorials, but not like what Kathy had on her shirt.

Kathy's shirt was weaved (or braided) all around the bottom hem on the shirt and the instructions are above for doing the same thing around both hems of the sleeves.

I'll see if I can get a pic!

It was really cute! I can't wait to try it on one of my school shirts. I hope we can work on it together during the Labor Day get together.

Here are the much anticipated pics from Kathy of her t-shirt with the weaving around the bottom!

Janet Boerner is practicing the technique and hopefully will be a "master" at it by the Labor Day Rally!

Did she figure it all out and make the t=shirt? Janet Boerner had some questions about part of the instructions and is figuring it out too! If Dorothy has done one...have her email me!

I followed the instructions for braiding around the bottom of a t-shirt but lost my way in the middle. I have made 2-inch slits and removed the masking tape. I cannot pull a loop through a loop--not enough space to do so. I am thinking that the slits have to be 4 inches, which would mean that I should have cut through 2 thicknesses when the tape was on. Is that right? If so, I think it would be VERY helpful to clarify that in your directions. Please help--I would really like to get this done.

I followed directions for braiding around the bottom of a t-shirt. Got stuck after making 2-inch slits and removing tape. Slits are too small to pull a loop through a loop. Should the slits be 4 inches? Thanks in advance for your help.
