Anyone else using solar in a Pop-Up?

We bought our second PUP this winter after getting rid of a large TT a few years ago. Our camping spots here in central California often have no hook-ups, so I decided to add solar power.

This of course resulted in the replacement of the battery, installation of an auto transfer switch, wholesale rewiring of the mess from Forest River, and addition of a Victron battery monitor.

When do these projects ever remain small?

Just wondered if anyone else had made any similar mods and what your experiences were long term.

Have you seen Nick Gatel's write ups on his solar mods to his popup and TT? They are excellent.

I haven't seen those, but I'll check them out. I did read a lot from a guy named Handy Bob, and I spoke with him for a while. He was extremely helpful, and has been camping with no generator or hook ups for going on 7 years, so he seems to have credibility!

I have a Renogy 100w panel from Amazon. After switching from incandescent bulbs to LED's, we can boondock indefinitely. Adding the panel want difficult at all, unless you're choosing to hardwire it (which I'm not doing). It actually was a small project and relatively inexpensive as well. To some extent it already started paying for itself since we camp several weeks a year and are using non hookup sites now (probably $7-$10 cheaper per night).

We went a little more in depth with the install, so it'll be a long time till it's paid for itself! But, I think if we're careful we can go indefinitely as well, though our trip to Washington State was more an exercise in conservation than getting any real solar help.
