Definitely should be part of the packing/leaving checklist. We lost one on our old popup and we just replaced one on our new one.

We found a 1934 Texas vehicle plate on our ranch last year. If anyone lost it, please reply (must describe in detail)

Before rolling out of the driveway, I check all the lights, including the license plate light. If it were missing, I'd know it.

Easier to fix things while still at home, so check everything before you roll.

I do now. Lost the plate on my jetski trailer over July 4th weekend. Didn't notice it was gone till a couple weeks later. The plastic plate holder snapped off so I welded up a metal holder and attached the new plate with bolts and locknuts. Always look at all the plates now before I leave.

Around here, we keep the same plates year after year, and just put a new sticker on each year. But I've heard of people having their plates stolen, and the thieves just put it on their next stolen car to throw the police off.

But this discussion reminds me of something I did in my own wild youth. A buddy of mine had to move his van, but it wasn't registered or insured or anything. He didn't have the cash to register it or have it towed, so he put a piece of tape on the corner of the plate, where the sticker would go. That year, the stickers were red, so he colored the tape with a red marker. I drove behind him so no one would see the bogus sticker. Looking back on it now, it was pretty stupid of us, but when you're 20-something, you don't think of things like that!

There's a new trailer plate law in Michigan. When getting plates for a trailer, you have to get permanent plates. They are good for the life of the trailer BUT they are non-transferable. The cost is based on the weight of the trailer. Since ours is a heavy trailer, I almost fell on my butt when the DMV agent told me our trailer plate fee was going to be $300!!! But, at least the sucker will never expire!
