Hang in there, someone w/ an Explorer will answer. We used a Jeep Cherokee w/ the 4.0L six to tow ours and it did fine. I'm sure the Explorer will handle the job.

thanks we just had to down grade from a 5th wheel (couples trailer) to the PUP because we were tired of the kids stealing all the heat on those cold nights and because of the gas now a days the way I figured it was that if we didn't down size now then we were not going to be able to afford to latter so we had a really nice Dodge 2500 and traded even for an Explorer and then we had a 23 foot 5 th wheel and traded to a 10 ft PUP so now I am hoping that we get the better mileage that we are hoping for

We towed a 99 Bayside with a 99 explorer EXT and the only time I had problems was when I put water in the tank, We added a weight distribution hitch and had mo more problems. I had read back then that U haul would not rent you a trailer because of its limits but don't know about the newer ones, my Daughter has a 07 and they would not install a hitch or put a tow package on it, so check it out.

If you have the Towing Package and the 3.73 axle, it should do fine with the normal size pop ups. You may need to add the Reese Mini-350 WD hitch.
When we towed with an Explorer, we added a tranny cooler and HD shocks. Ford still got to rebuild the tranny at 10,000 miles and again at 30,000 miles. Out total weight was just under 4000# on the loaded trailer, well within rating.

Not sure if this will be of use. My 07 Explorer Sport Trac is my toad but I do tow a 10' landscape type trailer with it. With the 4.0L V6 3.73 and Class II hitch, it's ok for short trips but would not want to do any great distances. MPG seems to drop off by about 2mpg. I know there is a Class III hitch available but I can't see where that would be any better.
Good luck with your selection process.

I have a 2007 Explorer with the V8 and it came from the factory with a tow package. According to the Owner's guide this package is good for a trailer weight of 7290 lbs with a GCWR of 12000 lbs. ( with rear axle ratio of 3.55)
I would think that the Explorer will work fine for you.
