OK, I have hydraulic brakes on my 1971 Bethany Citation 86 Pop Up Camper but that's all I know about them. The previous owner didn't mention them and I assumed that the trailer didn't even have brakes. My questions are: How do I know if they are surge or just breakaway type? How do you test each kind? Thanks in advance for any suggestions or information.

OK, I found the answer to one, I have surge brakes but still need to know how to maintain, adjust and test them. Surge-O-Matic brand.

Click onto. "Technical Assistance" and there you will find info on trailer brakes under the Index of Articles.

This was a great site for information. My next question is how loose should the tongue be? Mine has a lot of movement up and down as well as the back and forth movement needed to actuate the brakes. I tightened it up, but there are springs on the bolts and I'm not sure how tight they should be.
