Hello -
I just got an old Coleman Columbia pop up. The previous owner did not know the year the camper was made. I have a couple of questions: First of all, can anyone tell me where on the pop up I should be able to find the VIN#? I need it to register the camper in my state (North Carolina) and it would also be helpful in order new canvas.
Second: The person who owned this camper prior to the guy I bought it from modified the crank mechanism to work with a drill. The guy I bought it from tried to raise it the first time they went camping and it only went up halfway. He says the gears to the cranking mechanism broke. (Cables are all fine far as I can tell). He went and bought some kind of bolt and screw and rigged it up where you can lift it using a drill. However, it doesn't seem to be working properly...the camper will go up, but needs assistance (i.e., pushing up at the corners during lifting). I need to replace the cranking or lift mechanism, but not the cable system...Has anyone ever done this? How difficult is it? I'm wondering how much this is going to cost! I'm also having difficulty finding someone locally who works on tent trailers so the more I can do myself, the better.

Thanks for any information you can give.
Everything else on the camper seems to be in really good shape.

Kathleen:

I owned an 86 Coleman Laramie and as I recall, the VIN was riveted to one of the crossmembers (like the ones that hold the propane tank) on the trailer's tongue. I can't be certain whether they put them on Columbia's the same way but try looking in that area.

Thanks! I got in touch with Fleetwood and they helped me to find it...on the tongue. It's 1984 Coleman Columbia. They sent me the lift system repair manual right away and are sending me the owner's manual as well. I've read they charge for those, but they didn't charge for it. After reading the repair manual we believe our problem could be rusted pulleys and we need to make sure the shear pin is in good shape. I've also contacted Bear Creek and they are the most reasonable when it comes to a complete canvas for this model by at least 100.00 - I've read good recommendations for them so the restoration will be under way soon! Thanks for the info...K

How much did you have to give for it? Sounds like with a little TLC and elbow grease, you just might have yourself a gem.

$936.00 - also, ordered a patch kit which came with a large bottle of adhesive and 1/2 sq yard of canvas so patching will work for now. The two issues are the lift system and the door. The door is supposed to attach by cables to little wheels or something on the ceiling tract. I can find part numbers for everything else I need, but I don't know what the little wheel things are or how to find them. Any suggestions?
