I am running into the same thing. Some parks that my wife wants to stay at reserve the right to inspect and refuse coaches that are ten years or older. Yes they will deny you entry at the gate if you don't meet their criteria. We are going to ask for a copy of what is required from these parks before we go just so we can make sure we will not have to face the embarrasment of being turned away. Got to start polishing my 95 Vectra soon.

Regards,

Neil

Some don't bother to ask and few ask for proof.

If your rig is clean and neat, few will ever ask. Probably the biggest risk is that someone else, whose ratty-looking rig is denied entry, will point at you and say "What about that old rig - you let him in" and then they have to do something or be accused of discrimination.

Most of the bus conversions are sitting on a chassis that is well over 5 yrs old (I mean the commercially converted ones). The self-conversions are usually 10 yrs old. A standing joke amonst the self-converters is that a bus is never finished so we can just keep "bumping" the conversion year up on our rigs.

The 10 yr rule is to keep out the "undesirables" (you know who you are). Usually if your RV is clean and in good shape they will let you stay. You really have to watch out for the Class A Resort type places since they generally enfore the rule. Since we stay mostly in Public parks, it hasn't affected us. We have only been turned down twice for having an RV that was too old. In Chattanooga, both Ship's RV (we call them Pirates because by the time we added all the "fees" to the nightly charge it came to $75 per night) and Best Holiday Trav-L-Park turned us down sight unseen based solely on the age of our pop-up!! At the time we were staying in our vintage 1974 Apache pop-up (no canvas). Most people who see it think my pop-up is only 3 or 4 yrs old not the 32 yrs that it is. I NEVER, EVER recommend those parks to anyone .

We generally stay any from any campground that has "Age Restrictions" in the description. We are never sure if it refers to the RV or the people. Either way, we don't want to stay there.

If you plan on staying somewhere that has the 10yr rule, have a backup campground just in case.

Bill,

They probably drove away too many people with their version of the ten year rule :O

They will probably replace it with something quite different, too bad.

Regards,

Neil

This is no more a discriminatory practice than giving senior citizens a discount.

Same one. Interesting thing is they moved their sales area down next to the Interstate (I-75 Exit 1). It used to be part of the campground. Everytime it rains that area would flood. (David used to work in East Ridge which is Exit 1... it was a joke just like Boy Scout Rd flooding everytime it rains...) We haven't been by after a rain (we've moved) but I don't think I would want to buy an RV from those folks! But then I refuse to buy anything from them anyway... I always bought my Rv stuff from a place in Hixson (North side of Chattanooga... worked for me since I used Corridor J to get over to Chatt and if we needed to stay a few days in Chatt we would stay in Chester Frost Park)

My first impulse was to snap back at the senior discount comment, but the more I thought about it, the more correct it seems to be. I understand a campground owner trying to lure customers with a discount, but have more trouble understanding a similar owner trying to attract more attractive rigs and discourage others. There has to be a better way than just age. There are some OLD restored rigs looking better and worth more than some of the newer rigs. I read recently of a Freightliner rig that was denied occupancy because the nose stuck out and was not flat like most newer rigs. His Class C was a 1/2 million dollar unit. Is there a better answer to keeping standards up without being arbitrary?

So why is it we never get the discount?

I remember reading once (and seeing the pics on a website) about a Vintage Airstream club holding a big rally at a private campground. This same campground had a 10 yr rule and had turned older RVs away both prior to and post rally.

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">Is there a better answer to keeping standards up without being arbitrary? </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

No. It is simply a rather vague way of being able to say "You can't stay here because I don't like something about you." Their excuse is the age of the rig as opposed to possibly an excuse that may get them sued. If an older rig is pointed out, they will always say that they didn't know its age or one of the other workers let it in. To some people, if it's old then it's junk! My grandmother was one of them and I never understood it.

But my "junk" is mine and have no payments! I don't share it with a finance company or bank.
