1984 Small Block Chevy issues.

My rig is on a 1984 g30 chassis. Has a small block 350.

My issue is that when the engine warms up, it stalls. Ive replaced the alternator, fuel pump (switched to electric), power steering pump, and rebuilt the carburetor. When it goes into stalling lose there is kind of a growl that will happen when it tries to fire. It SOUNDS like its bogging the engine down, I dont know, negligee heard it before. My dad has been working on these engines since he was a little kid, also no clue. Im 500 miles from home and out of ideas.

Video linked is the growl when it tries to start. (Sorry, lots of background noise.)

You have points in the dizzy ?

Reason i ask when i am going to suggest, you will need to have 2 people one to turn the ign. key.

Run a wire from the pos. lug on the battery to the coil pos side try it now.

You will have to be quick with installing and removing the jump wire cause you can burn up the points if in the closed position with the jumper wire installed.

If the engine runs well post back we will go from there.

You can also PM me if i miss this thread.

I think the 84 would have an ignition module instead of points. I would replace the cap, coil, and module. Fairly inexpensive and a common problem. Twinboat has a good point also. Make sure nothing is stuck in the exhaust pipe.

Yeah HEI big cap with coil in it . Auto parts can test those modules but not if it only fails hot. They needed heatsink compound under. The power wire plug to those distributors would get bad/loose spades metal on occasion as well.
Be on lookout for vacuum leaks, stuck choke plate.
Weak links on those motor year were cams but I don't think on truck motors and fiber timing gear after 100k.

The HEI units also had an issue with the leads on the pickup breaking internally and when the vacuum advance moves the circuit will open. I’ve seen more than one tech chase his tail over this as checking with engine off will test good. It does require dissambly of the distributor to replace. With a unit this old I would go with a reman unit ( not rebuilt- there is a difference) This would result in a start and die as seen on the video. I believe the noise heard is a separate issue, sounding more like a starter not disengaging quickly. Please follow up with the fix you find.
