Our 1994 Ford 460 with Banks will backfire and smoke after we have been on the road for awhile in warm weather (75-80 degrees). It's fine going along the interstate, but when I let off the gas, it backfires and smokes. When we stop, it continues to smoke and run rough. We have been traveling in hot weather and it was acting up, it began to rain, cooled the highway down and it stopped. Previous owner said changing the alternator helped. Fuel filter has been changed. What next? Thanks.

Sounds like a fuel/air problem. I assume it's fuel injected, and the things I'd look at first are the air filter and the oxygen sensor. That's the two biggies that come to mind.
If both of these are fine then maybe have the timing and ignition system checked.

Good luck,
Dave

I would almost bet $100 it is the in-tank fuel pump. Mine acted in the same manner. It was the pump. Check fuel pressure when problem is occurring.

Wanted to let everyone know that it was the MAP Sensor. Technician replaced it, we took the MH on a three week trip to the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas and did not have the backfire and exhaust smoke problem. Thanks to all.
