I have a 1996 F53 460 Seabreeze that we are pleased with except for one nagging "opportunity"

In hot weather (only) we will be running along just fine and when we slow down to exit the interstate, the thing will act as if it is vaporlocked. This only happens in hot weather and usually within 100 to 150 miles of a fuel fillup. As soon as we change the filter that is located along the frame rail, voila, runs great.

It has 42,000 miles on it. Banks Power Pac and Transcommand. Engine and transmission do not overheat. Fresh plugs, wires, distributer cap and roter, K & N is clean. Fuel on the road is purchased at TA, Flying J and no junk fuel that we are aware of. Fuel source does not matter as it always happens.

It did not get much use in 05 and 06 due to health, but this issue was with us before that.

Help.

Possibly faulty fuel pump or corroded wiring going to the fuel pump.

Exactly the symptoms my 1990 and 1995 F-53's exhibited. New fuel pumps cured them both.

Well known fault with Ford chassis pre 1998 460 Cu.In. engine with fuel injection. FI requires constant fuel pressure. Pump gets hot and cannot maintain pressure, engine "dogs down, backfires, spits, and stops. 15 minute cool down and runs fine. Doubt that changing FP had much to do with it other than cool down time.

Not the kind of job I can do myself. With labor cost about $800 first time, $1000 the second. Good Luck!

Well documented problem with Ford F53 chassis in the mid-90's. Had the same problem on my '96 Adventurer. Ford produced a new design pump and wiring harness to address the problem. Should have been an extended warranty issue. Costs $750-$1000 to replace due to dropping fuel tank.
The stock fuel pump is immersed in the fuel, which helps to cool the pump. The fuel in the tank heats up as the fuel level in the tank gets lower. The stock fuel pump is unable to maintain proper fuel pressure in the injection system. Refueling will eliminate the symptoms for a while due to the cooling effect of the added fuel and greater volume of fuel. Only real fix is to replace the pump. Some have reported success by adding an external fuel pump, therby avoiding the extra labor of dropping the tank.

seabreeze133 and lenjohn welcome to irv2.
As has been said its the fuel pump had a 96 Bounder on Ford that liked to die in the middle of rush hour traffic # 64 Virgina.
Or any other rush hour traffic.
If you filled gas tank with fresh cool gas on hot day you maybe could stay out of trouble.
Check a recall list for Ford there maybe one and they will replace.
Enjoy the forums and do post often members now.
