My Hurricane 30Q owners manual (Ford Triton V-10 6.7 Liter) says to change the oil every 5K miles. I've always done my other vehicles at the 3K mark. Any opinions?

The other thing is the book says to use Motorcraft synthetic oil. What's the difference?

Depending on the conditions the rig is driven in will also determine how often this service is required, ie, dusty roads and pulling steep inclines; more often.

With "Heavy duty service", like any motorhome has to perform, I change oil and filter every 3000 miles or 3 months, very easy maintenace and inexpensive.

my fleetwood fiesta uses at least 1 qt. of oil every 100 miles I drive it. it is always getting clean oil. is it really necessary to change the oil? dealers all say this is normal oil consumption. I don't believe them but what do I know. betty

A quart per 100 (hundred) miles is certainly NOT normal. A quart per 1000 (thousand) is considered "normal", though it has to be on the far side of acceptable tolerances. Some 8.1L engines seem to have an early life oil consumption problem that often goes away over time as the internal parts wear in to a better fit.

Well, I'm a great believer in owners manuals, since they are usually pretty conservative in their maintenance programs. If Ford says 5000 is fine under your operating conditions, than I'd go for it. Modern gas engines can easily go 7500 miles or more in normal passenger car operation, so they have already reduced the interval to allow for the more severe use in a motorhome.

But if there is any doubt in your mind, use the shorer interval. Clean oil and filter is cheap insurance for a long and healthy engine life.

Gary's last post has the right answer in that the owner's manual is the source for maintenance intervals. If it were me, I'd have no problem going the 5K or one year, which ever comes first. If I were on a trip when I hit the 5K mark I'd delay until 7.5K or one year. With unleaded fuel, computer controled engines and modern oils to choose from, I would not worry over the extended oil change intervals.

I remember when oil was changed every 3K. Times have changed. Products have gotten better.

I'm using Mobil 1 full syn. extended service and changing at 5k. I think if I was towing I would still do 3k. Couple of bucks for peace of mind. scotty.
