Thanks for the info, I don't think my son's 03 has ever had anything but GM delco filters.Still reading zero oil pressure for last 3 weeks.Went out we think when pulling a boat up to Shaver lake Made some strange engine noise pulled over called me on cell for a about 5 minutes, started back up no noise when I met him on sat,I noticed the gauge had failed again.Think I will change the senser to a after market type and see if it does any better. Maybe his oil pump shaft is failing and you are hearing tapet noises. You shouldn't hear any strange noises if only the guage fails.
The dog ears on the shaft break off and maybe they are broken but wedging on and off causing him to have oil pressure some times. Connect a mechanical oil pressure guage and check.
I could post pictures if someone could tell me how.

Not a bad idea to check oil pressure, will try to get it to measure it. The valve train has allways been noisy even when new???????? Seems like the 8.1 is just a bit noisy over most big block Chevys MIKE

I Had the same problem on a trip to MT from AZ. The oil pressure went to zero on hard pulls up mountain passes. Changed oil to Castrol full synthetic 5w30 and problem went away. Also went to a NAPA oil filter, so don't know exactly what fixed the problem.

This is not directly related, but I have had problems with aftermarket filters (I think they were Fram) that if the engine sit for a while, it would clatter for a moment when started up. Went back to the OEM filters and didn't have anymore problems. The OEM filters had a check valve built in which kept the oil from draining back. apparently the aftermarket filters did not have this.
