8 KW Onan diesel generator randomly quits

Our generator quits randomly. It works fine when running. Fuel level is not low, oil level is fine.

Any ideas? Has 600 hours and is serviced regularly.

Did it flash an error code on the start button? When it quits take a look at it, count the flashes then press it toward stop one time and count again. Post the code or if you have a service manual it will be have a list of them.

There is a first level blink, which could be 1, 2 or 3 blinks. As Mark mentions above, pushing STOP again should produce the 2nd level error code blinks. There will be two sets of blinks seperated by a pause.

For example, an error code 36 would be:
blink-blink-blink <pause> blink-blink-blink-blink-blink-blink

Code 36 is fuel related fault, is fuel above 1/4 tank ? Air filter clean? Have you tried priming for about a minute?

A 36 error is generally fuel delivery related. Clogged fuel filter, failing fuel pump, twisted or collapsed supply or return line. If you'd like to test the fuel system I can post the procedure which is very simple and easy to do.

This is from a different post for a different problem (surging) but the fuel test is clearly laid out.... http://www.irv2.com/forums/f107/7500...ml#post2158541

yes, I was thinking likely clogged filter due to bad fuel maybe. Replaced mine recently and a world of difference.
