Acetone as a fuel additive

I talked to the head of our garage department today about this subject. He didn't recommend doing this. He said for one thing everytime he's tried any additives the cost of the additives more than made up for any savings in mileage gained. Secondly he said most modern engines have fuel injection as standard equipment which already does for the fuel what the acetone is claimed to do as far as completely vaborizing it. And lastly he said the last time he tried an additive on his personal vehicle it knocked all the old crud he had inside his fuel tank loose and it ended up clogging his fuel pump up and it cost him big bucks to take the tank off the vehicle, remove the pump from inside the tank, clean everything, and put it back together. "No thanks" was his answer!

Easyrider is right on target.

I have been in the retail fuel busines for more than fourty years. I have seen and witnessed many self proclaimed gimmicks that promised to increase mileage but were of little value. With the price of fuel rising to current levels we can expect many MEDICINE MEN pulling up with their horse and wagon offering a new brand of SNAKE OIL that will, if you rub it on your coach, reduce air friction on your MH . If you rub it on your tires, will reduce road friction. If you put it in your gas tank, will increase better combustion and all added together to give 25% better mileage.

Better we listen to the experts and follow their advice. Keep engine tuned and properly serviced. Slow down a little where we do less braking. Make sure tires are properly inflated and these all together will give a better return than the SNAKE OIL.

We don't need any of this. All we need is to get a president and staff that has the backbone to put the oil companies in thier place. If everyone would simply stop voting for the same old, worn out, almost dead, been bought out sevel times over politicians, we'd be fine.

Everyone that can and should do something about this issue are the ones profiting from it so it would cost them to fix it. Put someone who dosen't have an interest in oil companies in office and the problem can then be solved. Maybe change the laws that say you give up your intrests in things like this if you want to be in office.

I just heard an interesting discussion on the OIL Co. profits.....their profit on a gallon of fuel is 0.07 per gallon. State and Federal Taxes are about 0.67 per gallon. Just a thought!

No way on the profit level. It's got to be more than that. Todays efforts are directed to reducing more and more costs. Eveything is getting cheaper to produce and mfg, not more expensive. The oil companies have the people snowballed and have the politicians in thier hip pocket. That all there is to it.

In placing blame for the ridiculous fuel prices lets not forget the wonderful EPA which has certainly done their part in raising prices of almost everything, also the extreme environmentalist who, in connection with weak-kneed politicians, have prevented our developing our own sources of oil.

Whats bad is everyone tolerence for the nonsense. Just because it's Easter weekend, or memorial Day, the price goes up. The price dosen't go up on lumber and milk for those days, so why is this allowed for fuels?

Take a look in the mirrow boyz and girlz. Who was it that voted in that TEXAS BUNCH. Did you think for a minute they did not have an agenda for big oil ?

What we have to do is to vote against every sitting encumbent in office, maybe they will get the idea we are upset with them. And just maybe they will start voting for whats best for the AMERICAN PEOPLE, not their favorite lobbiests. IMHO.

The sad thing now is that they want to tax the oil company profits..who do they think is going to pay that tax? It will be us, the oil companys will just raise the price to reflect any tax they pay.

Update: I am still using the accetone as an additive and like the results I am getting. I have not been using it in the new Vue but after reading the previous article I may now. My 99 Chevy 4x4 is getting about 21 mpg now. I would like to see what the Vue may end up getting.

This implies that there is something known as "little oil." Who are they, and are they not profiting as well?

What some folks forget, or perhaps simply do not know, is that service station owners have their own association. That more or less amounts to collusion when they determine what price their members can charge for a gallon of fuel. That's one of the reasons why you always see stations who pump competing brands of fuel selling at the same per gallon price. Although they might have paid less for a truck load than the station across the street from them, they cannot compete by lowering their per gallon price w/o upsetting the owner's association.

It was these associations who were unsuccessful, at least in my state, in prohibiting businesses such as Sam's from selling fuel at lower prices.

I was getting about 17 mpg before I was using accetone and teh milage has so far climbed to about 21 mpg.
