Adding a sleeping bunk between the 2 front seats

I have a class A that sleeps 4. I have a family of 5. The 2 little ones share the pull down bunk above the front drivers area. They are getting bigger and there really is not enough room for them to both be up there anymore, even laying at opposite ends. I had a thought, 2 of them actually.

1. Add a second bed between the driver and passenger seats. I can turn the seats so that they face each other. Then rest a platform on the seats to make a sleeping bunk. I would need to add a couple of supports to the platform to prevent it from rolling off the seats, they are narrow compared to a bed.

2. Hanging a platform from the pull down bunk above. Something that can be removed and stored elsewhere.

Has anyone else done anything like this? Any other ideas or pitfalls I may have missed?

I was also thinking about making a panel that can cover up the staircase. This will give a bit more room when we are all in the coach at night. With no slides, floor space is a premium.

We have traveled with more than five over the years and as you say floor space without slides is a premium.
Your idea about a board between the two front seat can work with the support you mentioned.
The stair well platform is good for more space also which we used, even left it there when on the road so small kids didn't fall in stair well.
Later years as they grow up we pulled a Dutchman sleeper pop-up behind the coach.

Instead of building a platform try taking an old lounge chair that has the 2 sides that swing out. We just did one for our youngest and all I needed to do was cut a couple of 2x4's for support under the folding legs. We then put an air mattress over it and all good. Our doghouse for the engine lacked a wide enough spot so that was why I cut the 2x4's

Spent about $25 to do.

You can always get one of the fold up aluminum frame cots.

Thanks for all the replies. They are all good ideas. I have to go shopping around to see what I can find. 1st on my list is the folding aluminum cot, the lightest, then is the lounge chair, then build a platform out of wood. And last would be build a platform out of pvc and some cloth.

Thanks again for the ideas and suggestions. Please keep them coming!

Please Post a pic if you get a chance. My Class B has seats that fold out in the front but I would like to make a wider sleeping space.

We have the same problem with our 94 Fleetwood Coronado model 32G which only sleeps 4 people. We were considering converting the table and two swivel chairs to a dinette, but if anyone has some better ideas we are always open to suggestions.
We look forward to seeing photo's of a bed setup over the doghouse between the drivers and passenger seats.

Air mattress works well. Light, portable, only inflate it when needed, stores under the "main bed" with the rest of the blankets and extras when traveling. The best part is, once it's inflated you just throw it on top of another bed till it's needed. The " little ones" get up in the morning, give the air mattress with the sheets, blankets, and pillows a toss up onto the bunk bed and it's out of the way. Make sure to buy the 12v or 110v air pump, well worth the $.
