Adding Extend-a-stay

There is a cover over the regulator on the tank. The book and engraved on the cover states the cover must be in place. I won't be able to use it with the extend-a-stay. Why is it there? When I see videos/pics of the install, there is no cover. So what does the cover do? There are holes under the regulator to vent, so it is not keeping dirt/water out.

Thoughts.....

Hi taboky,
It is there for dirt and the attorneys (same thing ). With a little creativity you might be able to keep the cover. Go to Extend A Stay Added To Coach Propane System - iRV2.com RV Photo Gallery to see my installation. The regulator was where the extend a stay is now. I had to move the regulator to the right to accommodate the extend a stay.

Hey Gary, that looks like my exact cover/setup. Is there anything below the regulator? I assume the push rivet in the picture is in the original right side hole. Is the other side of the cover supported?

Hi taboky,
The cover is not fastened to the metal plate. The right side extends past the edge of the metal plate. The only thing keeping it in place is that the input and output hoses from/to the regulator were positioned through the cover before reinstalling the regulator. The cover can not move because the regulator holds it in position.

Thanks Gary. Went to put mine on and it doesn't fit. Think my biggest problem is the kit now has the POL connector, which adds length. I need to find the connector to the regulator side like yours. If I leave mine on, the hose is REALLY bent and up against the front mudflap. Don't like it. Picture 1 is the item I have, picture 2 is the hose bends.

So where do it get the peice I am looking for?

That is what I thought too. Turns out the cover on my rig was easily removed and moved over a bit,, Check to see if yours is like that.. NOTE: You may have to drill a hole or two in the plate it mounts to but this is OUTSIDE the tank and easily done.

I extended that plate with a bit of plexiglass I happened to have handy.

Hi taboky,
My suggestion is to find a shop that sells propane hoses, adapters, fittings, etc. Work with local propane dealers to find the shop. Take all the parts to the shop and tell them what you want to do. If it is a good shop, they will have what you need. That is what I did. While I have not been back to the shop, its' location has an honored place stored safely in my GPS.

Since you guys have already installed your extend a stay. Does the regulator turn counter clockwise to remove?

I might suggest adding a brace under the extend-a-stay, maybe at the fitting between the regulator and the e-a-s. The first time I installed mine, there was a great deal of vibration because the regulator has been moved out further and one of my fittings vibrated loose causing me to lose propane.

Hi homerbw,
It's been a long time. The threads look like right handed threads.

The fitting is a POL (Prest-o-light) and tht is indeed a left hand thread.... That is if the fitting screws INTO the valve on the tank

If it screws ON TO, the valve.. that's right hand thread

I just cut out a small piece of sheet metal and pop riveted it to the plate on the gas tank that the regulator cover attaches to in order to extend the plate out and have something for the cover to connect to. Works great.

Thanks all. I found the piece I was looking for. I will extend the bracket for the cover which in itself will support the regulator.
