AeroTurbine 5050XL muffler
Just finished installing a AeroTurbine 5050XL muffler on our 98 Signature w/M11 450hp Cummins.
THROATY!!!! What do you expect for $135(no shipping or tax)? QUIET? I don't think so.
The rotted out muffler that came off was a Donaldson#M120108. A Donaldson dealer here wanted $200+ shipping + tax.
We are doin a 2000m snow ski trip in it soon. I'll report back here after our trip with any noticeable mpg and/or power changes.
I'm a somewhat deaf retired pilot, ex-street rodder, and ex-drag racer, so I like NOISE!

I'm looking at one also. How difficult was it to remove the old "trash can"? I'm thinking about the resonator model. Their claims of a 15% power increase and .5 to 1 MPG incease would be nice if true.

I had the AeroTurbine installed this past summer. It is a bit louder than the stock muffler. I am seeing about .6 MPG increase for the last half of the year.

5050XL
The AeroTurbine muffler is beautiful. Polished stainless! I can't believe anybody would bother to make a muffler beautiful. CRAZY
Vegasdan
Taking the old muffler off our 98 Signature was pretty easy. With hand tools I was able to remove the muffler clamp that was retaining the ss tailpipe. At the other end of the muffler there was another muffler clamp, but there was also some tack welds retaining the inlet exhaust pipe which required an electric grinder with chop saw blades, and plenty of rust buster. There were 2 hanger straps that went around the old 10" x 15" x 32" oval muffler that bolted to the frame. The AeroTurbine 5050XL is round, 7" in diameter and 30 inches long. Donaldson makes a round muffler hanger that is 7" in diameter, pt#P206516. If your coach is like mine, you'll need 2 of them. I chose to have someone I know that does custom steel fabricating come to the house and fabricate and install straps and mount them to the frame. I did the rest. Instead of using std 5" muffler clamps to retain the inlet and outlet pipes, I used step strap clamps at each end of the AeroTurbine to retain the inlet pipe and tail pipe. Also, I had some leftover fire proof seal material that I put between the hanger straps and the muffler to eliminate vibration and dis-similar metal corrosion.
I drove the beast around a little this afternoon to see what it sounded like going down the road. It is definitely louder. The most noticeable time is when the Jake brake is activated.
I LIKEY, especially if we get the mpg improvement GaryKD got.

We had an AeroTurbine put on our coach last year. The original muffler was rotted out and the size of a trash can. I'm actually surprised they can make something that small that was not that much louder. It is throutier but the DW didn't complain so all is well. The sound it makes when driving next to a wall is awesome.
We also put on an AFE air cleaner while we were at it. One thing we'll do down the road is have the exhaust tip come through the sidewall. I'm afraid one day I'll scrape it on something.

Where did you get the air cleaner and did you install it yourself?

There was a gentleman selling the muffler and air cleaner assembly at the Newmar international rally this year. He wanted 400 for the muffler and 400 for the K&N type air cleaner. The air cleaner had the paper guts removed from the filter canister and a less restrictive k&n air cleaner in its place. The whole thing installed was 1200.00. I thought that was way out of line price wise when you can buy the muffler for 150-200 on ebay. I talked to Cummins rep at the rally and he said Cummins would not warranty any engine problems attributed to the replacement air cleaner or muffler since either were not original replacement parts . Since I am still under warranty for another year I am going to wait on my muffler/air cleaner upgrade.

I have the 5050XL in a box downstairs and it's a straight thru. Where's the resonator part? Unless it's the prongs sticking out.

Don (lonestarace)
I have received my 5050XL but have not yet worked out the installation since I needed to travel over the holidays and did not have time to do it before I left. A quick glance before I left indicated I'll have to have either a 4 inch or 5 inch 90 degree elbow from the exhaust flex tubing to the Aero on my CAT 330. You have not mentioned the elbow so is your system different?
Thanks Bob

5050XL
1Ciderdog
On our coach(98 Signature w/450 Cummins), the inlet into the north/south mounted 5050XL is the original 5" mandrel bent steel pipe that has two 90 degree bends in it between the east/west flex pipe and the 5050XL. It straightens out just before the inlet of the 5050XL. We reused the original ss tailpipe and original steel inlet pipe(all 5"). The only thing we changed were the mufler clamps(5" step clamps) and the muffler mounting straps(7" custom made).
We hope this helps
Don

Thanks - on my Cat engine the exhaust goes into the top of the muffler so I'll have to get an elbow. Not a major problem but just another thing to deal with.

Have you looked on EBay? That's where I picked one up at a reasonable price.
