air/fuel vs Vacuum gauge

I was at a swap meet and came across a Auto meter Air/fuel meter for $5.00. The suggested retail on this meter is $80.00. After reading the instructions i really dont think it is what I want. I have used vacuum gauges in the past to help improve my gas mileage by trying to keep the highest vacuum reading while maintaining constant speed.

The Air/Fuel meter really dosent tell me when the highest vacuum is acheived only that my mixture is correct from the O2 sensor.

Is my thinking correct?

Yes and if you want to sell it and it is in good shape, I'll double (or more?) your money and pay postage.

I am putting SU 4 carburetors on an engine and need to measure the fuel/air ratio for proper tuning.
