Am I Crazy?

We purchased our new Fleetwood Storm 28MS last November. We had plans for many weekend excursions, a long weekend trip to see my son in Norfolk this May, Florida for two weeks with our grandson and 6 days in the UP.

So far we have dry camped in it three nights, one night on the trip from the dealer in GA to home in OH and a couple nights last November for my granddaughters birthday in Columbus.

About 4 weeks ago my MIL was diagnosed with cancer and my wife has moved in with them to help out as she goes through Chemo. She has even taken intermittent FMLA so she can hold on to her job as a NICU nurse and take care of her mother. Needless to say our life has been turned upside down along with her mothers. I am staying home (we are only 2 miles apart) to keep things up with the house.

I was talking to her about cancelling the trip to Norfolk and she said there is no reason for me to not go see my son but she just wasn't comfortable leaving her mothers side just yet. I understand and fully support that as my wife stood by when my dad was sick.

My first thought was that I wouldn't go to the trouble of taking the Fleetwood and just drive my truck. I have however been thinking that I really need to get the MH out and figure out what might not work correctly during the 1 year warranty period. I still haven't brought it out of being winterized yet.

I am a little nervous about not having a co-pilot that can look things up for me on the road but I am also thinking this is not a big thing and I am definitely capable. I would take my time and probably boondock on the way down which she doesn't like to do anyway and just make a good weekend of it with my Son. I won't be towing the CRV as that is her car to drive at home.

Am I nuts to take this on by myself for a first trip in a new unit?

Take the coach out. I never have enough time on a trip to attend to the rig, because of other activities. And a one year warranty is useless it you dont discover what is broken.

When driving, you can always pull over to check maps.

Go for it.

No, not nuts at all. There are a lot of lone wolf RVers who always travel that way. A co-pilot can be handy when driving in an unfamiliar area or backing into a tight spot, but is by no means critical to an enjoyable trip. Just plan your travel a bit more cautiously, familiarizing yourself with the map of the area and alternate routes if needed. A good GPS Nav system helps too, to give warning of turns and such.

No. You should familiarize yourself with your rig. There could come a time when your wife might end up in a hospital many miles from home and you will need to operate your rig solo to be near her.

Go and enjoy your visit with your son.

Wow, what a quick and warm response. Are there any IRV2 folk planing to be in the Norfolk area the weekend of May 20th?

Don't forget when looking at maps to use the earth view (satellite view?) to look around along your route too so you don't get yourself into a jam or sticky situation.

I have a Garmin RV760 that keeps me in pretty good shape and made the trip last year in my Winnie 29TR, so reasonably familiar with the route

Tim: You have a lot of good advice. Life is full of challenges and obviously your family is facing one as we speak. It is admirable that your DW is so supportive of her mother and has been supportive when your father was ill. I would definitely do what has been suggested. While driving solo is not as as easy as with a co-pilot, nonetheless doable with some careful planning. Early this summer, I'm taking a solo trip to Miami, OK, to have some service done on my new to me Newell. I'll, too, follow the guides suggested here!
All the best to you and your family!

Probably 1/3 of my RV traveling has been with just me and the dog. I gave up trying to teach the dog to read maps so now let Garmin and my phone to get to my destination.
Actually we can make a lot better time because there really isn't much else to do but drive or rest. When we stop I don't even put the slides out.
Go for it

Do it and you will learn tons about the coach and when you again travel together you can impress her with your knowledge.

I have done the solo thing a couple of time. As we full time it was quite interesting. I think the longest was eight months. I was lucky enough to have a dog for my co pilot and someone to talk to. A couple of things I found out were that I could not do as many miles a day as I thought. Everything seemed to take longer doing it solo. I gained a great appreciation for just how much she contributes to the effort. Get yourself a good gps. I know it sounds crazy but I use two. The RM7710 and a Garmin. Learn to use face time or other video chat and you will look forward to those time.
