Battery dilemma
My 2 - 12v house batteries are 5 years old. Their serial numbers are within 2 units and they've been connected in parallel since the get-go. 1 of the 2 will not / does not hold a charge. My dilemma is: do I just replace the bad battery or because of their age, replace both of them?

Both, at that age. The good one is on borrowed time.

You have to replace both batteries . After 5 years the battery charge / discharge characteristics have changed significantly . An older battery will require a higher voltage to reach full charge. You will end up overcharging the new battery and undercharging the old battery , both conditions will shorten the life of the battery. The life of the batteries is around 5 to 7yrs , so they are due for replacement.

Both. As stated the battery characteristics change with time. It is best to have batteries wit h the same charge/discharge characteristics...so replace both. And at 5 years you have gotten most of the value out of the batteries. I expect my batteries to last 5-8 years with really good care.

If money is available replace both. It is both a wise economic and good technical decision.
If you have made the choice to replace both batteries then you have to decide with what and which manufacturer.
Lead acid, AGM or really out there lithium.
Are you only dry camping occasionally? Happy with your existing battery capacity? Then replace in kind with lead acid. Many good manufacturers here.
More serious boon docker? Then look at AGM batteries and maybe a increase in capacity (amp rating). Solar could be added on to any battery system.
Boon dock for months, money is no barrier and have to have the latest Apple phone? Then look at lithium batteries/adding Solar with a big jump in capacity.
Good Luck!

Thanks for all your inputs - 2 new batteries it is! Looking at AGM's.
As an aside --- checked voltages on both batteries this morning (both have been disconnected from each other and all loads) and both are at less than 10.5V . Both are bad: one just took longer to die
