Has anybody used an acid neutralizing mat in their lead acid battery tray(s)?
http://www.batterymart.com/p-battery-mat.html

I removed all my batteries from their trays, cleaned the trays with baking soda & H2O, repainted them with plastic paint, then lined the tray floors completely with them.

My hope is to reduce and/or eliminate the tray corrosion.

Time will tell?

I"m kind of anti-mats in areas that might get wet, be it acid or plain rain water. I don't like mats that hold the water in and promote rust.

That said.. I don't know if those mats will or not

Now, some of the more chemical resistant paints out there... Stuff that is all but (If not actually) Designed for battery trays.. That I support since it bonds to the metal and keeps water off.

Correct the problem with the batteries and/or the charging of them, and you should only have to maintain them, without having a corrosion issue.

The price is right and anything you can do to prevent corrosion in the battery bay will help. Here are my questions.
  • It doesn't say how often or how you know it's time to replace the mat.
  • It says the mat contains felt. As you know water will enter the battery bay and if the felt gets wet when driving in the rain will it hold the moisture preventing the bay from drying out.
I suppose you could do the same thing by sprinkling a box of baking soda in the battery tray and adding a little water to disperse it.

Let us know how it works out.
