New Good Sam Campground Directory says leave black tank dump valve open while hooked up and keep grey tank dump valve shut. They state this in two places. What gives? Opinions and experience requested.

Don't do it unless you want the "pyramid of doom" in the black tank. I believe the author meant and should have said the opposite.

Uh yeah, I wouldn't take the comment in that article to heart unless you want some real problems.

We weekend a lot so most times both are closed even at full hookup site. If on an extended stay the black is always closed and the gray open until a full day or more before we leave. I like having a lot of gray water in the tank to flush the hose

X-2 I've had a kid on a bicycle run over my hose if I'd of left them open what a mess.

Black closed is a no brainer. The grey can differ depending on usage. I usually leave closed except for when showers or washing machine are in use. As others I like lots of grey water to flush the hose after dumping the black.

Now that I think about this issue more, I think I am going to do what you do. Opening the drains on these tanks should only be done at the time when they are to be dumped. This gives the operator the chance to ensure all equipment is in proper condition and is connected and installed properly right before the dump hour.
Thanks for that insight.

That is my opinion. Also, in the year and a half of full timing I have opened a few sewer covers and seen the dreaded flies inside the sewer dump hole. I don't want those buggers on board.
