A coach with a build date of 8/01,is this a 2001 or 2002?
It's on a 2001 ford with a vin of 1FCMF53S810A04986.
Advertised as a 2002 RexHall Rexair 19K miles 21 hours on a Generac generator..
Asking price $ 18900.
Needs tires.

The chassis is purchased by the coach builder and by the time all is finished the coach can be released as a model year newer than the chassis build year. This is common.in the RV industry.

The model year is established by the RV maker when it is delivered from the factory. A document called the Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin is the basis and that year is what goes on the vehicle title. The chassis VIN is NOT the controlling date.

Usually by August the coach maker is building the following years models, but there is no hard and fast rule. It is whatever the vehicle title says it is.

The year of the coach is whatever year the title says it is.
The "build date" is when the coach was built....(as the name implies).

As Gary said the MSO will determine the year put on the title. BTW, American Coach recently announced a new model coming out now...2016 Eagle. Don't know how they decided on that date...but that's what it it. Might not make any sense, but build date is irrelevant.

That's true if the state follows the Federal regulations. Some don't.
I had a lot of fun getting CO to abide by the regulations and put 2004 on the title for my VIN 2003 chassis.

Here is some info on the subject. The Feds say the state must use the manufacturers model year designation.
See
HERE for info and a phone number to call for help with a state employee that does not know the rules.
