Can't fill installed propane tank in MA?

So,

I just bought my first motorhome. I went to get the tank filled at a local place and they said "Sorry, new Massachusetts regulations say we can't fill a tank in a vehicle, but if you drive to our store in NH (20 minutes away) we can do it there."

So, is this really a thing? Is this going to be a problem that will sweep across the country? or is this just MA being MA and over regulating everything in sight?

Thanks,
Matt

ps I did get it filled in NH

I think I'd do some more checking on that. Did you talk to any other propane places?

I'd also call some RV dealers and ask them.

I'll add a comment. Ask at an RV park if they have a propane truck fill MH tanks on-site. There is a "special" fitting adapter required to use a household LP fill nozzle to fill a MH tank. It's just easier to kick the blame to someone else than admit they don't have the special adapter fitting.

Can't fill installed propane tank in MA?

I did not call anyone else as the nearest place to get filled (that I know of) was in Jeffery NH and that's where they sent me (same company just different location). When I called, the guy on the phone didn't hesitate at all with his reply - so it wasn't made up on the spot.

WHat kind of a rig, what kind of a tank, ASME or portable picnic BBQ type tank. It makes a difference.

If MA passed that kind of a rule for permanently installed ASME tanks, they undoubtedly get the booby prize for idiots of the year.... But then again it's Massachusetts, so that explains a lot.

It's the asme tank in my Itasca Sunrise.

And yes, it is MA - battling with CA for highest rate of stupid legislation/regulation.

Couldn't find anything about this when I did a Google search. I suspect they are reading some law incorrectly.

Guy on phone.......
Call him back and ask for the 'MA Regulation' that he is referring too cause I highly doubt there is one.
Even CA hasn't got that ridiculous and it would be a FIRST if MA did have one.

ALL ASME installed propane 'tanks' have to be filled while in vehicle cause they are permanently installed unlike propane 'cylinders' that can be removed...which they have to be

Also a call to The New England Propane Gas Association at 888-445-1075 will clear up that misinformation

Sounds like they are Massachusettsing the law. Most states have the law that they cannot fill a propane tank that is in a vehicle. NOTE: "In a vehicle" NOT installed in a vehicle, if they passed that stupid of a law then they would not be able to use propane powered vehicles.

They are reading and misinterpreting the law wrong! Actually there are similar laws in many states that are for safety reasons. The law does not apply to permanently installed tanks in motorhomes, or for that matter cars. When the law say in a vehicle it is referring to situations like portable tanks sitting in the bed of a pickup or the trunk of your car, filling tanks in these situations can lead to pooling of gases which could lead to an explosive hazard.

Whoever said they can't refill the tank on your motorhome needs to actually read the law. I'm betting the person didn't actually read the law and was going by what someone else, who can't read, told them! Like old-biscuit said, even CA isn't that dumb!!!

I'm guessing Jaffrey, and not Jeffrey! (I live in Jaffrey.) If you go there, Belletetes can fill it, as can the RV place on 202 south of town. Going north, Agway in Peterborough has filled our tanks in the past too.

I wonder if they somehow make more money selling propane in New Hampshire rather than Massachusetts.
