Can't get cruise to turn on

Smart wheel on a 07 Beaver Marquis. Been working fine then I couldn't get it to set. Tried to turn it off to reset and it wouldn't do anything. Pulled over shut engine off. The green cruise light went off but now nothing works. Traveling up on the mountains and no shops near. Anyone have any ideas on what could be wrong? Appreciate any suggestions.

Safe travels

Can't get cruise to turn on

My old HR needed to have the Jake brake switch in the off position. It was a pain, but that's how it worked. Good luck

First check the easy stuff like have you left your Exhaust Brake or Engine Brake switch on?

Next, it could be a faulty Clockspring in your steering column that is associated with the Smart-Wheel.

Are there any other functions not working on your Smart-Wheel?

Most cruse control systems draw power off an ignition controlled lead, and off the brake circuit (Very little draw there)

They look for 12 volts on the battery side of the brake light switch
They look for GROUND on the lamp side of the brake light switch

The following things will kill them.

On some: broken vacuum line (not all) or ruptured slave vacuum cylinder or bad slave vacuum valve (Again not all are vacuum operated).

Bad brake light switch (Been there)
Blown brake light fuse (likewise)
Burned out brake lamp lamps (Have not blown all of em yet)
Blown CC fuse (Likewise not yet done that one).

NOTE the brake switch may also affect ABS.

Thanks for all the replys guys. All the other functions on the smart wheel seem to work. I'll check out the brake lights today. Once before the toad lights were messing the cruise in our other Marquis. I unplugged the electric to toad but didn't effect the cruise this time. Thanks again everyone.

Safe travels

In the mountains it is best not to use it anyway. It can't see the up coming hill like you can.

Cruise

Found the problem. Brake light bulb out. What a great site, never once asked for help that several of you jumped on right away with assistance. Such a wealth of information and not at $140 an hour! Thanks again everyone

Safe travels all

Are you saying that a blown brake light bulb would disable your cruise control system to the point that it wouldn't even power up let alone activate?

If so, then some engineer put a LOT of thought into that system.

Glad you got'er fixed.

My cruise does not work, horn either. Also both side brake lights are out.

Took the coach into Freightliner and had a computer scan run to obtain correct mileage, as my odometer only showed 6k miles and I thought I had a bad unit that send data to the gauges. Scan showed correct mileage which proved the unit that sends data to the gauges had been replace before I bought it.

The scan also showed that the computer is seeing my brakes in an applied state. In other words, the computers sees brakes being applied and will not engage the cruise. As for the horn and rear brake lights, I don't know.

This is one of the next things I have to fix after the bathroom repair I'm finishing up.

Somehow, they are all tied together. The tech said I had two brake switches that test good and that there must be another that he could not find.

This is second time I've had this happen on two different coaches. Both were brake light related. Bet good chance if you replace your brake light bulbs your cruise will start working. Good luck

Several folks have found corrosion on those two brake switches under the brake treadle. It's possible that it would test ok but have enough current across the corrosion to trip the cruise control.
