Although I haven't tried Windex, I do use ammonia from time to time, which is about the same thing. I've had experiences with 50/50 Vinegar, which does a great job on carpet. After messing up my Hoover with vinegar, I don't intend to put it in the cleaning solution tank on my Big Green! Spraying vinegar from a Windex bottle is a rather slow painful way to do it.
I recently got a
Roundup weed sprayer from Lowes which comes with a bunch of different spray nozzles, one of which is a fan spray, intended for spraying stain on wooden fences. This would be idea for applying the vinegar solution to the carpet, upholstery etc. The solution could then be sucked up with Big Green without risking damage to the pump and spray seals.
When I damaged my Hoover, I had cleaned the MH carpet with a vinegar solution, but didn't bother to rinse the vinegar out before quiting for the day. When I went to use it the next morning, when I went to finish the job, it just gushed all over the floor!
