After looking at the available Central Vac sysems for RVs, I decided to install a Shop Vac. I bought a 3.5 gal, 4 hp, wall mount model that fit into my storage compartment just aft of my entry door. I tapped into an existing outlet and ran a new leg into the compartment and installed a surface mount double outlet box. The box is switched so that I can turn the vacuum off and on from the living space. I installed a vacuum outlet in the stair well which is centrally located and the 18' hose is long enough to reach all the areas. Cost breakdown is as follows:
Shop Vac $59. (Lowes)
Vacuum fitting $5.
Electrical $10.
Total $74.
The power is awesome and the convenience is a plus..

Captain Bud

Sounds like a great idea. Can you post some pictures? Thank you.

I also have the Dirt Devil. It works fairly good, but your idea may provide a stroger suction and a bigger storage cannister.
