Changing profile/Bathroom door handle

The door handle on our bathroom door (which is located in a narrow hallway between the living area and the bedroom)sticks out approximately 2". My DW has a tendency to hook herself on this handle and it is starting to irritate her.

I decided to lower the profile by cutting a section out of the hall side and a propotional amount of the working shaft. This simple fix turned out to be complicated. The working parts of the handle are factory assembled and are not readily dissassembled.

Any ideas as to how to address this situation will be greatly appreciated.

I am not familiar with the exact type of hardware you have; but if it were me, I would check with Lowe's or Home Depot to see what other type of door hardware they have. They may have something that doesn't stick out as far.

In a house we used to live in, the closet doors had regular knobs on the outside with just a small "T-shaped" handle on the inside that only stuck out an inch or so. If similar hardware is still available, maybe you could mount the knob on the inside of the bathroom and the smaller handle to the outside. Just make sure the trim plate on the new hardware will cover any leftover mounting holes from the existing hardware.

Dale - paz is right on. Get a different handle, rather than do the modification. We put a smaller L-shaped handle in our Pace years ago for the very same reason, and it worked just fine. I'd go online and cruise the selections.

Thanks for the comeback. Actually, I have been on line but with negative results so far.

I can't remember where we got it years ago. Maybe you could pull the existing knob assmbly, cover the hole in the door on both sides with some nice matching veneer to cover the hole, and then use a flat sliding latch on each side of the door, which would virtually eliminate the outside knob (actually both of them.) Don't know how it would look, just trying to think outside the box.... Someone else will probably think of something better.... Best of luck with it
