Coach Decision Impacted By Toad

Currently we pedal about in a 35ft FRED Super C. We are hoping to soon upgrade to a 43 ft DP.
My arithmetic says 43 ft + 3 ft bar + 18 ft Toad (Subaru Outback) or our other longer F150 Crew Cab, tread upon legal lengths in most places.
Do we need to back down to a forty footer?

Don't worry yourself about the length. Buy what you can afford and with a floor-plan that works for you.

I've been traveling for over three years now throughout the US & Canada with a rig that is almost 72 foot long. I was somewhat concerned until one morning I woke up next to a rig that was 5 feet longer than mine. it was a commercial moving truck so after that I don't give it a second thought.

We're below the legal in most states but I've watched for reports and I've only heard of people getting measured a few times. I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Welcome to iRV2. Take this off your list of things to worry about. Comply with the law in your home state and leave it at that.

There are different laws for each state - but, many have set the max overall length at 65' for non-commercial vehicles and non-commercial licensed drivers...so the set-up mentioned with the Subaru would be no problem in those states. I would check my local laws.

Would an over-length RV ever get cited? I don't know, but if there was an accident, it could become an issue.

While a remote risk, there can be a chance that police would set-up vehicle enforcement stations near where RV's collect...equipment enforcement includes weight/length/license checks.

Like, in the mountains near a very popular off-road area in SoCal, police where stopping RV's for this purpose. An acquaintance of mine (who was driving a MDT Super C and towing an enclosed trailer loaded with off-road toys) was ticketed for exceeding the legal weight allowance of his drivers license...His trailer's GVWR required an upgraded license type.

The area you speak of in Southern California would be the I-8 corridor around the Glamis Dunes Recreational area.

I would stay away from traveling anywhere near that area. The CHP are ticket happy with anyone in that area.

I've never needed to be around that area but if I did, I would drive hundreds of miles out of my way to avoid it.
