Coleman Mach Basement Heat Pump

Why does it make a strange sound when it is cycling on 50 amp. It happens approx. every minute or minute and a half. It sounds like it is
trying to kick in. And it only does it on 50 amp not on 30 amp. Is the
sound normal or is there a problem? It is on a 2005 National Dolphin 5342.

My guess is that you have 2 compressors and the second one is not starting properly so it cycles. Ours turned out to be a faulty compressor, but it could be something as simple as bad starting capacitor(s).

martind4 probably has given you a good answer. Why does it not do it on 50 amp but do it on 30amp?????? My guess is that your EMS is shedding the 2nd compressor load when you are on 30 amp..........just a guess.

Sounds like the right diagnosis to me ...mine was burned wiring (service tech said likely due to low campground voltage) & start capacitor. When I heard it keep trying I turned off the breaker for the second compressor and we used it fine with just one compressor until we could get it fixed.
