Hi Homer,
How would your cc company know you were using a commercial truck pump? At the J or Loves or TA the receipt is the same at the truck pumps as it is at the RV/Auto pumps. I've been to all of them.

The second question is why would the cc company care what pumps their cc customer used? As best I know, the cc rebate is based on the merchant used, not the pump used.

Another way to save money on fuel is knowing what states have higher fuel taxes than others.

Typically, I'll fill up in NJ (the ONLY thing cheap in NJ is gas and diesel), skip PA, MD, WV, and then fill up again in VA (Flying J at I81 exit 323 right over the border). Fill up in SC. On I95, fill up in GA right before the FL border.

You should also avoid CT and NY for fuel.

And DEFINITELY fill up either at the last gas station on the FL Turnpike or in Florida City (stations are very tight with your rig) BEFORE you hit the Keys.

Gary KD, Hi - I don't know that JP/Chase would refuse commercial pumps, I don't find any language that covers it. However, with the pricing differential, I am assuming they would exclude commercial pumps.

Gary, I don't know about other companies but I do know that Flying J runs two separate entities. One commercial (truck pumps) and one retail (gas pumps and RV island). When they report CC transactions it will show as a commercial or retail purchase. I'm not going to say all, because I certainly could be wrong, but I believe most CC rebate programs exclude commercial purchases. I think the reason is pretty obvious when you think about the number of owner/operator rigs on the road that get much worse fuel mileage than a motor home. These guys have 500 gallon total tank capacities that don't get them as far as we do with 100 gallon tanks.

If you, and/or others, have been getting a printed receipt from the truck pumps and your CC rebate (not the standard FJ rebate) when fueling at a Flying J truck island, then I'm surprised. I will ususally try to fill at the RV island because of the reasons stated above to get my CC rebate. If I fuel at the truck island, I can start the pump outside, but have to go inside to get the receipt, but it is definitely considered a commercial transaction as far as either one of my CC rebate programs are concerned. Just my .02

I have to agree they don't have the straight pull in like Flying J's but I have had no problems with a 40ft diesel pusher with a toad or the 5w and F350.

My experience with charging fuel at the J is different than yours. The purchase process is well known and highlighted in your post. I have AMEX and Chase (MC & VISA) CCs. They go by merchant number. I get 5% from AMEX (my primary CC) and 3% from Chase on fuel, no matter where I make the purchase. The merchant number at the J is the same or different not by internal company, but sometimes by location. On occasion I have purchased fuel first thing in the morning. Drive all day and purchase fuel again just before pulling into a CG. We return to the J for dinner and must go through AMEX or Chase's security check when charging the dinner. When making 3 purchases at the same merchant number on the same day, both CC companies want to make sure it is the legitimate owner of the card making the purchases. The Js in questions have been 400 to 600 miles apart and in different states. And yet they had the same merchant number!

There is no way, for a customer to know or should care about the above mentioned complexities. Consider changing to a CC company that provides the same level of service that AMEX or Chase provides. Then one could use which ever pumps are convenient.

Just so happens I have both of those cards, but my experience is 180 from yours....go figure.

Pentagon Federal Credit Union (PenFed) has a Visa Platinum Cashback Rewards card which pays a 5% discount monthly on all fuel charges - but only if you pay at the pump. The card has no annual fee, there is no maximum limit to the cashback amount and the funds are credited to your account monthly.
