From Cummins site:
"Whenever an engine has been inoperative for more than 30 days, Cummins recommends disconnecting the wire to the fuel shut-off valve and cranking the engine until oil pressure registers on the gauge before starting the engine. This practice will prevent "dry starts" and allow oil to bearings and shafts prior to starting the engine. A toggle switch can be wired into the starting system for this."
Have anyone of you done this?
Where is and how to identify the "Fuel shut-off valve".
Thanks

I have done it on gasoline engines but that was easy on the older ones as you just pulled the primary wire off the coil. On limited use engines we would put a toggle switch on the positive lead powering the ignition coil. This also comes in handy to prime things up after an oil change.
What I have read on a search for, Cummins fuel shut-off valve, is that energizing it without starting the engine for more than two minutes has cause some to fail. So using the On instead of the Acc position of the ignition switch say to power up your levelers or slides could lead to a problem.

Thanks for the reply. Called Cummins this morning and found out that I don't have a Fuel Shutoff Valve. I have a High Presure Common Rail System. Engine will crank but will not start untill the ECM sees minimum oil pressure.

The Cummins advisory applied to older engines mainly. The hot wire to the normally closed fuel cutoff solenoid was easy to unplug. Some modified the circuit with a off/on switch. For daily use, and engine longevity diesel shops recommended buying the aftermarket electric, oil prelube pump; which acted similar to the now standard pressure sensor.

This thread once again shows that it does help to read manuals supplied by vendors for your specific engine or any other component. This issue i.e. Startup Procedure after Extended Shutdown or Oil Change is spelled out in the Operating Instructions in the ISC/ISL Owners Manual

Not really. I am aware of what the Owners Manual says. I would just rather have a proceedure that I could control and if it could be done I would rather use a "Shut-off valve". After the engine sits for a rather long time, I would like to spin it over a few times and not have it start the "instant" the ECM sees some oil pressure. And there are many errors in most manuals.

I guess I'm confused why you would quote a passage that does not apply to your engine if you had read the manual. However, that said the manual isn't wrong on this one and I think you had better check whether extended cranking can cause injector failure since its the fuel that lubricates them. I will check my Cummins colleagues when they get back to work after the first of year just for my own edification.

ecker: I guess I should have stated in my opening post that I found the information which promped my post at the Cummings Site (not my manual) where they talk about the "Shut-of Valve", they make no mention as to what engines this may or may not apply to. Sorry I have caused you so much concern with my curiosity. Don't worry about the exteded cranking. Without the Shut-off Valve it would not be a possibility unless something is wrong. By the way I have about 50 years of working around engines of all types and I have not screwed up yet. However I do have ongoing curiosities. Shop manual for the Cumminge ISC 330 is ordered and on the way so be at ease that I will have good refference info (assuming that there are no errors in the manuals).
UPDATE 12-24-07: Cummins "Troubleshooting and Repair Manual" arrived in todays mail. Just a quick glance for now but will be nice to become familiar with all the info inside. I will never use most of the info on a "Hands On" basis, but it sure will be nice to have for refference.
