We are getting delivery of our 07 Safari in September and want to have a computer desk installed. If we can find one in the right configuration that would be great but think a custom-made piece is our only real option. Having never visited Elkhart we don't know what to expect there for RV furniture suppliers but assume there should be a fair amount as this is rumored to be the RV capital of the world. We also want to get one of those cool Euro-recliners but are going through sticker-shock at the web prices we are seeing. Any advice on this would be appreciated!

Another thought if you can spec out exactly what you want is to order your desk from one of the Amish furniture makers in Indiana or Holmes County, Ohio.

We bought a nice euro recliner from JC Penny last year for approximately $620.00.

Also had a custom cabinet done by a local cabinet maker. An experienced cabinet maker can be found in most any city.

AKTrek,

We live in Ohio right on the edge of the Holmes County Amish community. Most of Oak furniture in our home base is Amish made and it is very well made. But it is heavy, very heavy. The Amish live/work on a different timeframe from the rest of the world, no phones in their shops or their homes. When you talk delivery times to them you are talking weeks or months. It took 3 months for our bedroom furniture to be made from the time we ordered it.
Now this is the true Amish I am talking about, not Mennonites, there is a difference.

Although you would have the highest quality available with Amish made, the delivery to Alaska would be terrific, much more than what I would imagine you could get a good cabinet maker there to make a custom piece for you.

Sorry, Guess I didn't answer your question about furniture in Elkhart.

Most RV manufacturers make their own wood furniture right in their plants for each model specific.

In Elkhart their are some RV surplus dealers that handle the standard stuff like you can buy at Camping World as far as wood furniture, tables etc.

One thing you could try is to look at other RV's and if you see a desk in one of them, see if the dealer will order it from that manufacturer. Just a thought.

Ron

Denny,

I would recomend:
Davis Cabinets
150 E 10th
Junction City , Or 78447
541-998-8778

Link Davis Cabinets

I have seen their work and they use the same wood as in the Safari's. You will not be able to tell is is not factory. They will make anything for you in any wood.

I am sure there are some in the Elkhart area, If you called the Chamber in Elkhart, they would know.

Wow,Thanks everbody for your input We probably wouldn't have found out about delivery times and the difference in Amish and Mennonites. And good call on JCP for the chair Fred! We don't have JCP here in Frbks so I doubt we would have thought to look there for furniture. As far as Davis Cabinets goes,Jim, you are about the tenth person to reccomend them. I have only heard wonderful reports from folks about them and when we thought our Trek was going to be made in Safari's Oregon plant, we contacted them. Good friendly company, but I don't know if the shipping across the states would be worth it. Ron, never thought of looking for furniture in other coaches Great idea if the wood matches and I can sell it to DW.
Three weeks 'till blast-off into our full-timeing adventure. Leaves are turning yellow here, house not leased, two trucks and one boat still unsold, Garage sale next weekend and still need to move out all our houshold furniture. So BORED, all we can do is run around in circles and slobber!! YYARRGGLL!!

THANKS ALL!

If you can get to Oregon....there is a company that specializes in custom RV cabinetry and computer desks. They also do work for Country Coach, Beaver, Safari, Monaco and others. Thier quality is second to none, prices reasonable and they can do ANYTHING...almost. Thier work will match your existing woodwork perfectly. Davis Cabinets in Junction City, Oregon.
