Looking for some information regarding the use of fuel additives in our Detroit 6V92 engine and I am hoping that I'm not resurrecting and old issue. Couldn't find a category in the powertrain forum so here I am. These engines are not seen around much any more and accurate info about them is even more difficult to find. Many folks lump the Detroit 2 strokes in with the 4 stroke engines and they are very much a different breed. I have been told by other RV owners that I should be putting Stanadyne in the fuel but I have also been told that using a 15W-40 engine oil is o.k....................not! so if anyone can help us out you will be right up there on my appreciation list.

92 Hummer,
I am new here and have a bus conversion with a DD 6V92TA. I researched the dickens out of this, and two topics which mostly come up are Oil & Fuel.
I use only straight weight 40 or 30, mostly the former. It must be the CF (IIRC) diesel rated oil. I do not stress the brand so much, Rotella, Delvac(?) so forth. Any one making a comparison to a 4 stroke is incorrect.
I do not run any additives to the fuel, although I must confess I have not heard of Stanadyne, so I can not comment specific to that product.
With the winter blends, the ULSD, I still use the diesel fuel provided by truck stops.
One other item you are aware of is not to run your 92 with a engine temp over 200*. I get quite concerned after 185* and guard that temp guage.

Thanks for your reply. I also got into "the battle" of correct oil. As with you I have also opted for Delo 100 40W.
Eng temp.............I wasn't advised about that (my after the fact info was never over 200) until I had already run her at 220 for about 10 minutes. BIG OOPS!!!!!!!!!!! but already done. No noticeable damage........................ at this time any way. Afterward I was told that I was lucky the computer didn't start the shut down sequence..........I'm still open to info so please keep it coming. If you are interested in Stanadyne, I do have some and if the majority of the 2 cycle community I'll give it a try and let you know the results.

It is very important to keep the proper level of additives in the coolant of
a two cycle Detroit, forget the fuel! Get yourself to a Detroit dealer immediately and buy the special test strips they sell for checking the coolant. This is your single most important engine check, without the additives available from the dealer these engines can have catastrophic
failure of the oring seals on the sleeves and be ruined before you can pull over to the side of the road.

I don't think you need to add anything to the fuel. Plain old #2 diesel should serve that engine just fine. Some folks worry about the ULSD lacking in lubricants, but all the major refiners are putting lubricity enhancers in their refined diesel. You could add standadyne or sinilar product with lubricity enhancers if you feel you must. Others like ATF or even vegetable oils.

The rest of the comments about proper engine oils, coolant additives, etc. are right on.
