Different Flooring Question

We are seriously thinking about removing the carpet from our MH, but we have conserns about insulation and road noise. For those of you that have put in either some type of vinyl linoleum, or laminate flooring, what is your experience with road noise and cold/hot floors since the change? And how did you secure it to the plywood flooring ?

We'd like to go with some type of interlocking laminate flooring, but not sure if I could work it around the kitchen sink due to the angles. We also like the vinyl linoleum flooring, but we have that in our house kitchen, and will sometimes get "buckling" from the expansion.

I've read COUNTLESS threads on here, and have gathered some excellent info, but didn't see much about noise.

Thanks.

We used laminate flooring in ours. No noticable difference in road noise. We do use an area rug for warmth and to protect the laminate floor from scratching (it will). You do not secure it with anything other than the perimeter mouldings.

We put laminate in our coach, and we have definitly less engine noise. We would do it again. And the V-10 is noted as being a noisy engine.

This is what I did as well. Good luck.

I put down lino in my 1989 mh. The carpet was worn and stained. I wanted to put in laminate floor but time and money didn't allow that. We got a great deal on a remnent so we went that route.

About noise, I didn't hear any difference. I have a gas puller so all I hear is the usual noise coming from the doghouse. I will admit the floor is cold but I've got my slippers by the door so it doesn't bother me. We run from cold weather anyway.

Oh yeah, another issue I have is being 6'4", I wanted to keep the flooring as thin as possible for the maxium headroom. I picked up a bit with the carpet/padding gone and didn't add much with the lino. This isn't an issue for most however.

Slides? For those who have done this flooring change with slides - do the slides scratch and/or mar the new flooring? How do you get the new flooring under the slides?
Thanks
Bob

A flooring product you may want to consider is what is called a "luxury vinyl tile". Most of the major companies offer these, although they tend to be advertised more to commercial than residential customers. In a couple of months we will be using Armstrong Alterna tile to replace the carpet in our living area as well as the ceramic in our kitchen. If you ask an Armstrong retail dealer about this tile line you may get a blank stare but you can find info here: Alterna Vinyl Tile Floors from Armstrong

For the relatively small square footage in a MH the price of this material isn't really any different than any of the alternatives. We paid ~$1k for enough tile, mastic and grout (yes, grout is used with this vinyl tile) to do the area we are interested in.

The materials are rated for residential/light commercial use so they should hold up well. They are not affected by water which was our concern about laminates in the kitchen, although I know people do use them routinely. We figure they will be warmer than ceramic, but will still be cool underfoot. We do have area rugs, but are also considering adding heat to the floor (it can be done with vinyl if the temp is kept <85F.

We'll be able to tell you more in a couple of months.

We replaced the carpet with a laminate. It is described as a "floating floor covering" and is not glued down. I did glue the tongue and grooves together.

I have not noticed any additional road noise except the barrel chair behind the passenger seat has a squeak that i believe to be the metal against laminate floor, even though the chair is bolted to the floor securely. If I take out the chair for any reason I will add a rubber gasket between the laminate and the metal base.

I left the carpet in the cockpit, bedroom and on the slide. It did not scratch when retracted but have read threads where people have had this happen.

It is no colder than my tile floors in the stick and bricks.

We replaced our carpet in the main area and bedroom with laminate. We got it at Costco, and it is about 3/4" thick. The slide clears it just fine and does not scratch the flooring. The carpet and underlay is about the same thickness as the laminate we used. The noise level I think is quieter in any case no louder. With the furkids it makes cleaning a whole lot easier. In our coach the kitchen area was done in tile and we left it like that. Laminate is colder on the feet but we use a couple of mats and it is fine, again easier to clean.

We went with Allure planks from nose to tail in our 40DP and really like it.

No increase in road noise but it is cold on bare feet. We did have some trouble with the slides scratching it in a few places.

If your slide out uses skids, I'd recommend not doing the laminate floor as it will be scratched, ours is. If your slides have rollers, it will be ok as long as you keep the rollers clean.

Just put down a plastic table place mat where the slide rubs and that will protect the floor when the slide is in. The slide will slide over the place mat and protect the floor.

Our big flush slide mars the ceramic tile!
I'd call it unavoidable.
