Disconnected power BUT...

My steps stayed out... anyway to put them in for the winter without hooking battery backup.

Probably took you longer to post this message then hook the battery backup. LOL
I would suggest going old school... Sorry not really helpful...

Got to reconnect the battery then put your steps in. Quickly disconnect the battery and your good for the winter.
If your dead set against reconnecting the battery , you can crawl under the steps and disconnect the motor from the steps . Its dirty and messy. You can then push the steps in and tie them in place.

I place a magnet on the sensor than disconnect the battery
