DIY Starter repair Onan Microquiet 4000

Hi
My Onan Microquiet 4000 has a starter problem. The starter spins and will not turn the motor most of the time. Once in a while it will but not often. This sounds like a Starter Drive problem with a stripped starter gear. I found little or no info specific info for that unit and nothing anywhere with pictures.
I did find this

which is the only thing to actually show the location. It is part one and in case you wondered there is no part 2.
I plan to take lots of pictures. This will hopefully become a How Too post for others.
I will attempt to replace it with the generator in place. The starter is on top in the rear. The vacuum tube and carb linkages are in the way but removal is simple. I will remove the 4 allen bolts holding the green case so that I can lift the case an inch to gain room to work. I think I can get a socket in there. I'll tie a string onto it in case I drop it (old boaters trick.) If it cannot be done that way I will be posting a How To post on how to remove the generator in your driveway with primitive tools only. I hope not.

Please feel free to chime in with suggestions. The group efforts seem to work well.
Pictures will start soon. Research first.

Same Problem

I have the same problem, Onan 4000 just sits there and spins, tries to start but gear sounds stripped.

Will have to find a onan mechanic or do it myself. Like you did.
