I grew up in Sumter, SC. Shaw Air Force Base was close. The rumble of the jets was always present. I can sleep through that. When we left Sumter and moved to Laurens, SC we were a block from the train tracks. The vibration, the clicking, the rumble of the engine and the horns was easy to adjust to.
I now live in a town names Hickory Tavern, SC. No trains, no jets. That took some sleepless nights to adjust to.
I love to hear the trains run down the tracks while camping. The kids think it's cool.
Now, I only wake up if one of them faceplants in the floor in the middle of the night🙀

I never lived by train tracks until we started full-timing in the RV. That being said, I have always had a deep-seeded love for trains. The RV park we winter in (last year and this year) is within view of a train track, which happens to be the exact spot that they start braking for the yard. Lots and lots of squealing. Doesn't bother us one bit. In fact, we actually prefer it when we are trying to go to sleep and one of the trains start braking outside.

Denise and I have actually planned trips where we would camp near the train tracks on purpose; we're both train nuts. There are fourteen camping areas on highway 1 between Hope BC and Cache Creek that have both CN and CP mainlines running right beside them. We go there to get train fixes whenever we need one.

If train noise is really your thing; try camping at The Elkhart County Fairgrounds. YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!

The clickety clack of steel on steel or the hum of 20 cylinder diesels powering up is somewhat "romantic" for me. The multiple blasts of the air horn at a grade crossing 200 feet away every 20 minutes, not so much.

What I like to hear at night, is nothing that is not nature related. Much as I love trains they do not add to our camping experience.
I did note that KOA's seem to be intimately involved with railroads.

I thought that it is requirement to build commercial campgrounds only near railroad tracks.

Since full timing a few years ago, it seems like every campground we stay at has tracks nearby.

We are heavy sleepers, so it doesn't bother us.

LOL- thats exactly what I was going to post! after a good night sleep you can visit the The National New York Central Railroad Museum in Elkhart.

As soon as I saw this thread. That's the first place that came to my mind.

Double train tracks with trains all night long from both directions.

It is so neat to hear all of the positives! Thanks.

We often look for "train gripes" in campsite reviews.

BTW, Horseshoe Curve near Altoona PA is an absolute marvel.

And....AND, as we travel, if there is a train ride nearby....OH YEAH BABY!!!!
